Category: Legacy and Historical

Description: Defines legacy SynOptics common management objects for hub platform identification and status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SYNOPTICS-COMMON-MIB?

SYNOPTICS-COMMON-MIB is a legacy proprietary MIB from SynOptics, an early networking hardware vendor later merged into Bay Networks/Nortel, defining common management objects shared across its hub/chassis platform family. It exposes chassis-level hardware identification and status, including chassis and backplane type/revision, power supply type and status, fan status, and a per-slot installed-module identification table. As a hardware-focused MIB it is squarely aimed at monitoring physical health, letting an operator detect a failed or missing power supply, a stopped fan, or an unexpected or missing module in a given chassis slot, alongside reporting the management agent's software version. The available material does not show explicit dependency on other standard MIBs, consistent with it being a self-contained legacy vendor MIB. It is deployed on legacy SynOptics-manufactured network hub/chassis hardware in older enterprise LAN environments. Engineers can download the SYNOPTICS-COMMON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SYNOPTICS-COMMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • SynOptics (legacy) network hub/chassis

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls s3ChassisPsStatus and s3ChassisFanStatus to detect a failed power supply or a stalled cooling fan in the chassis before it causes a thermal shutdown. The s3SlotConfigTable/s3SlotConfigEntry, indexed by s3SlotNumber, reports each slot's s3SlotModuleType and s3SlotModuleDescr, letting an admin confirm the expected module is installed and flag an unexpected card swap or an empty slot. s3AgentSw reports the management agent's software version, useful for firmware inventory and compliance auditing across a fleet of chassis.

What Can Be Monitored

  • chassis power supply status
  • chassis fan status
  • per-slot installed module type
  • backplane type and revision
  • agent software version
