Description: DEC RoamAbout wireless access point MIB for managing PC card type, bridge mode, and network configuration on early 802.11 wireless access points
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RoamAbout-MIB?
RoamAbout-MIB is a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) vendor MIB for the RoamAbout line of early 802.11 wireless access points, one of the pioneering commercial WLAN product families. It exposes hardware and configuration data for the AP such as PC card (radio card) type installed, bridge mode, IP address assignment state, onboard memory size, direct-sequence (DS) channel and country/regulatory variant, and network identifier (NWID) settings. Its monitoring value includes both hardware and software status: rabtPCCardType and rabtMemorySize speak to installed hardware, rabtIPAddressState and bridge/uplink dump mode settings speak to network/software configuration state, and rabtForceUplineDump/rabtUpgradeFlash relate to firmware update and diagnostic dump operations -- collectively useful for confirming the AP's radio hardware, addressing, and firmware state are healthy. It predates and is independent of later IEEE 802.11 MIB standardization, being a purely proprietary DEC module (later associated with Enterasys/Cabletron following DEC's networking business transitions). It would have been deployed in early enterprise wireless LAN rollouts using DEC RoamAbout access points, now a legacy/historical device class. Engineers can download the RoamAbout-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RoamAbout-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- DEC RoamAbout wireless access point (legacy 802.11 AP)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll rabtPCCardType to confirm the correct radio card model is installed and rabtMemorySize to verify onboard memory matches spec, while rabtIPAddressState reveals whether the AP has obtained a valid IP address versus remaining unconfigured. Checking rabtDSChannel and rabtDSCountryVariant would confirm the AP is operating on the correct RF channel for its regulatory domain, and rabtBridgeMode indicates whether the unit is functioning as a bridge versus another operating mode. rabtForceUplineDump and rabtUpgradeFlash relate to triggering diagnostic memory dumps or flash firmware upgrades on the device.
What Can Be Monitored
- PC card/radio type installed
- IP address assignment state
- bridge mode
- onboard memory size
- DS channel and country/regulatory variant
- firmware upgrade/diagnostic dump state

When true(1), indicates that the AP should use the BootP protocol to auto-configure parameters such as its own IP address, gateway IP, subnet, TFTP server IP address, and file name. When false(2), indicates that the AccessPoint should use locally-configured parameters stored in NVRAM. |
| IP rabtFirmwareServerIP | 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.18.35.16.2 | IpAddress | read-write | The IP address of the TFTP server that should be used for firmware downloads. This value will be ignored when 'rabtFirmwareUseBootp' is 'false(2)'. |
| OCT rabtFirmwareFilename | 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.18.35.16.3 | OCTET STRING | read-write | The name of the remote file that contains the firmware to be downloaded. This value will be ignored when 'rabtFirmwareUseBootp' is 'false(2)'. |
| INT rabtFirmwareStatus | 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.18.35.16.4 | INTEGER | read-only | Indicates the success or failure of the AccessPoint's most recent attempt to download new firmware. In the case of a failure, the value of this object may provide some clue as to what caused the failure. This MIB object does not distinguish 'managment-initiated' reloads from reloads that the AccessPoint initiates. |
| INT rabtCrashUploadUseBootp | 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.18.35.16.5 | INTEGER | read-write | Controls where the AccessPoint gets the information that it needs to upload crash dumps. When true(1), indicates that the AP should use the BootP protocol to auto-configure parameters such as its own IP address, gateway IP, subnet, TFTP server IP address, and directory name. When false(2), indicates that the AccessPoint should use locally-configured parameters stored in NVRAM. |
| IP rabtCrashUploadServerIP | 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.18.35.16.6 | IpAddress | read-write | The IP address of the TFTP server that should be used for crash dump uploads. This value will be ignored when 'rabtCrashUploadUseBootp' is 'false(2)'. |
| OCT rabtCrashUploadDirectory | 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.18.35.16.7 | OCTET STRING | read-write | The name of the remote directory to which all crash dumps should be uploaded. This value will be ignored when 'rabtCrashUploadUseBootp' is 'false(2)'. |
| roamaboutConsole | 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.18.35.17 | |||
| INT rabtUseConsolePassword | 1.3.6.1.4.1.36.2.18.35.17.1 | INTEGER | read-write | Indicates whether the AccessPoint console (command line interface) should be password-protected. ------------------------ NOTE ------------------------- Currently, password protection won't take effect unless the read-write community string is something OTHER than 'public'. This could change, though it's unlikely. ------------------------------------------------------- |
