Category: Security, Switching

Description: Manages Pica8 OpenFlow switch configuration, flow table utilization, and controller connectivity status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PICA-PRIVATE-MIB?

PICA-PRIVATE-MIB is a Pica8 Inc. proprietary MIB (enterprise OID 35098) for the Pronto product line, reporting switch CPU/memory/temperature health and SFP transceiver diagnostics. Its objects cover CPU usage, total/used/free physical memory, switch/CPU/switch-chip temperature, an SFP-status table (index, vendor name, serial number, temperature, voltage, bias current, TX/RX power, type), an RPSU (Redundant Power Supply Unit) status table (index, status), and TFTP config/batch-file paths. As a hardware-performance MIB it lets an administrator watch CPU/memory pressure and SFP optical health across a Pica8 Pronto switch. It is deployed on Pica8 Pronto switches. Engineers can download the PICA-PRIVATE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PICA-PRIVATE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Pica8 Pronto switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator monitors cpuUsage and sfpTxPower/sfpRxPower to catch resource pressure or a degrading transceiver on a Pica8 Pronto switch.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CPU/memory/temperature health and SFP diagnostics

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using sfpTemp OID:

Select a Pica8 Pronto switch (CPU/memory/temperature/SFP diagnostics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type sfpTemp into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The temperature of sfp ransceiver transfer. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the reported value exceeds the level expected for healthy operation, since sustained high temperature often precedes thermal shutdown or hardware degradation. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
