Description: Manages packet storm control thresholds and suppression actions for broadcast, multicast, and unknown-unicast traffic on switch ports.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is PKT-STORM-CTRL-MIB?
PKT-STORM-CTRL-MIB is a generic enterprise/proprietary MIB for packet storm control, a switch feature that suppresses excessive broadcast, multicast, or unknown-unicast traffic on a port before it can overwhelm the network. It exposes a trap-control object governing whether storm-control notifications are sent, alongside an underlying storm-control configuration object controlling suppression thresholds and actions per port. Its monitoring role is centered on fault/traffic-anomaly detection: whether storm-control traps are enabled, and — via its associated configuration table — per-port thresholds and whether a port has recently triggered suppression, flagging a broadcast storm or misbehaving device on that segment. It appears to be a standalone proprietary module without an evident dependency on other standard MIBs beyond the vendor's base interface indexing. It is typically deployed on enterprise switches where administrators want early warning of broadcast/multicast storms that could degrade LAN performance. Engineers can download the PKT-STORM-CTRL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PKT-STORM-CTRL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Enterprise/vendor Ethernet switches
Monitoring Examples
An admin can check swPktStormTrapCtrl to confirm storm-control trap notifications are enabled, then subscribe to those traps to be alerted whenever a port's broadcast, multicast, or unknown-unicast rate exceeds its configured threshold and triggers suppression. Because only the trap-control object and a truncated storm-control object name were captured in the sample, more detailed per-port threshold objects can't be cited with confidence.
What Can Be Monitored
- storm-control trap enable state
- broadcast/multicast/unknown-unicast suppression events
- per-port storm-control threshold status
