Category: Server/Systems Management

Description: Monitors PCI hot-plug controller status, slot power state, and card insertion or removal events on server platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PCI-HOTPLUG-MIB?

PCI-HOTPLUG-MIB is a hardware-management MIB for monitoring PCI hot-plug controller status on server platforms, allowing administrators to track expansion card slots that support hot insertion and removal without powering down the system. It exposes status data for each hot-plug slot, including physical slot number, PCI bus and device number, bus width (32-bit vs. 64-bit), and bus operating frequency. This MIB is squarely about monitoring hardware status -- the presence, identity, and electrical configuration of PCI cards in hot-swappable slots -- which is important for detecting unexpected card removal, insertion, or misconfiguration on a running server. It reports its own management agent's software version (sieHotPlugAgentVersionMajor/Minor), indicating dependence on a vendor hot-plug management agent rather than a single IETF standard. It is typically deployed on rack or tower servers with PCI/PCI-X hot-plug backplanes where cards must be serviced or replaced without downtime, and the PCI-HOTPLUG-MIB MIB is the reference module administrators consult for this hardware status data.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PCI-HOTPLUG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • servers with PCI/PCI-X hot-plug backplanes

Monitoring Examples

An administrator could poll siePciHotPlugSlotTable entries -- siePciHotPlugSlotPhysicalSlotNumber, siePciHotPlugSlotBusNumber, and siePciHotPlugSlotDeviceNumber -- to build an inventory of installed hot-plug cards, then check siePciHotPlugSlotIs64Bit and siePciHotPlugSlotFrequency to confirm a newly inserted card is running at the expected bus width and clock speed. If siePciHotPlugNumberSlots changes unexpectedly or a slot entry disappears from the table, that would flag a card removal event needing investigation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • number of hot-plug slots
  • physical slot, bus, and device numbering
  • bus width (32-bit/64-bit)
  • bus operating frequency
  • hot-plug management agent version
