Category: Environmental Monitoring, Server/Systems Management
Description: Defines IPMI Platform Event Trap (PET) event type codes and event data fields for server hardware alert notifications.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is PET-EVENTS?
PET-EVENTS is a MIB that models IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) Platform Event Trap (PET) definitions, translating standard IPMI sensor/event codes into SNMP trap/OID form for server hardware alerting. It exposes event-type codes and event-data fields corresponding to IPMI sensor categories - the module description's example ("Under-Temperature Warning, Lower non-critical, going low") shows it covers environmental threshold events such as temperature going out of range. This MIB is squarely about hardware fault/status monitoring: it is the vehicle by which out-of-band server management (a BMC running IPMI) alerts an SNMP-based NMS about hardware problems such as over/under-temperature, fan failure, voltage out of range, chassis intrusion, or power-supply faults. It is fundamentally tied to the IPMI specification and is typically used alongside vendor server-hardware MIBs or an IPMI-to-SNMP trap-translation gateway. It is deployed in data centers on server hardware equipped with a BMC supporting IPMI PET traps, forwarded to SNMP management stations. Engineers can download the PET-EVENTS file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PET-EVENTS. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- server hardware with an IPMI-capable BMC (Baseboard Management Controller)
Monitoring Examples
The petEvts object tree defines the IPMI event-type codes and data fields carried in a Platform Event Trap; the module description's example of "Under-Temperature Warning (Lower non-critical, going low)" illustrates the kind of coded sensor event this MIB represents. An admin receiving a PET trap decoded via this MIB sees which sensor category (temperature, voltage, fan, power supply) crossed a threshold and at what severity (non-critical, critical, non-recoverable), enabling rapid triage of a failing server component such as an overheating CPU or a degraded power supply. Since this is fundamentally an event-code/trap definition module rather than a polling MIB, its main use is trap interpretation rather than active SNMP GET polling of live counters.
What Can Be Monitored
- temperature threshold events
- voltage threshold events
- fan failure events
- power supply fault events
- chassis/hardware event severity level
