What Is ONS15501-MIB?
ONS15501-MIB is a vendor MIB for the Cisco ONS 15501, an EDFA (erbium-doped fiber amplifier) optical amplifier platform used in DWDM/optical transport networks to boost optical signal power. It exposes objects for optical gain, input/output power levels, and alarm status, alongside software/firmware management objects such as flash bank images and active/configured software image selection. Its monitoring value spans both hardware and software status: operators can track optical power and alarm conditions to catch amplifier degradation or fiber problems, and separately check which software image (flash1/flash2/flash3) is active or configured and monitor download status during upgrades. It also includes NTP configuration objects, tying its time synchronization into standard NTP for accurate alarm/event timestamps. It is typically deployed in service-provider optical transport networks at amplifier sites along long-haul or metro DWDM fiber routes, where ONS15501-MIB SNMP monitoring gives operators visibility into amplifier health and software status.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ONS15501-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco ONS 15501 optical amplifier
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would check ons15501SysDevActiveImage against ons15501SysConfiguredImage to confirm the amplifier is running the intended software version, and monitor ons15501SysSwDownloadStatus during a firmware upgrade to catch a failed or stalled download. The ons15501SysDevFlash1Image/Flash2Image/Flash3Image objects let an operator see what software is stored in each flash bank before triggering ons15501SysSwDownload. Separately, ons15501PrimaryNTP and ons15501SecondaryNTP configuration combined with ons15501NTPAdminStatus reveal whether the amplifier's clock is properly synchronized for accurate alarm timestamping.
What Can Be Monitored
- active/configured software image
- flash bank image contents
- software download status
- NTP server configuration and admin status
- device CLEI code

The value of this attribute triggers the alarm, based on mean value and trigger as defined by ons15501OutputSignalPowerMean and ons15501OutputSignalPowerTrigger. This value is internally calculated using the following formula. ons15501OutputSignalPower = ons15501OpticalPowerGain + ons15501InputOpticalPower At very low ons15501InputOpticalPower (below -16 dBm), the ons15501OutputSignalPower has significant difference from ons15501OutputOpticalPower while at higher input power (ons15501InputOpticalPower) they are closer. Following graph captures the difference (for a 17 dBm EDFA) (dashes '-'/'_' denote optical output power while dots '.' denote signal output power) ^ | .- | .- | .- +5 dBm | .- | .- Optical | _.- power / | _ -. Signal |_ _ - . power | . | . | . -17 dBm +-----------------------+--------------> -29 dBm -10 dBm Input Optical Power |
| ONS ons15501OutputSignalPowerMean | 1.3.6.1.4.1.1869.11.11.2.6 | Ons15501TenthdB | read-write | Mean value for output optical power.
