Category: Optical Networking

Description: Monitors SFP/SFP+ optical transceiver presence, vendor identity, wavelength, and optical power levels on Paradyne equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PDN-SFP-MIB?

PDN-SFP-MIB is a Paradyne vendor MIB, aligned with the SFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA), that lets an NMS read the identity and diagnostic data encoded in an SFP/SFP+ transceiver's EEPROM on Paradyne SFP-compatible ports. Its sfpInfoTable, indexed by ifIndex, exposes connector and encoding type, fibre-channel/transmission-media BITS fields, vendor identity fields (sfpVendorName, sfpVendorOUI, sfpVendorPN, sfpVendorSN, sfpVendorRev, sfpVendorDate), supported bit-rate range (sfpBRNominal100Mbps, sfpBRMin/Max), supported link-length fields for fiber and copper, laser wavelength, and a live sfpStatusCurrent BITS field for real-time module status. Because SFPs are pluggable and hot-swappable, this MIB is normally cross-referenced with the Entity MIB (RFC 2737) to map a given SFP instance to its containing port ifIndex. It's primarily an inventory/identity MIB rather than a traffic-counter MIB, useful for detecting incompatible optics and tracking vendor part numbers fleet-wide, and it's deployed on Paradyne SFP-compatible access/transport equipment where the PDN-SFP-MIB MIB documents exactly these transceiver identity and status objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PDN-SFP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Paradyne SFP/SFP+-compatible access and transport equipment

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls sfpVendorPN and sfpVendorSN across sfpInfoTable to inventory which optics are installed fleet-wide, and watches sfpStatusCurrent for a given ifIndex — a bit indicating loss-of-signal or a fault condition would flag a failing or unseated transceiver before it causes a link outage.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SFP vendor identity (name/OUI/part number/serial/revision/date)
  • SFP connector and encoding type
  • supported bit-rate range and link-length fields
  • laser wavelength
  • current transceiver status bits
  • fibre-channel compliance/media BITS fields
