Category: Optical Networking

Description: Monitors Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) power and wavelength data on Infinera nodes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is LUM-OCM-MIB?

LUM-OCM-MIB is a vendor MIB for the Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) function used in DWDM optical transport nodes (as associated with Infinera-family equipment), which measures per-wavelength optical power across a WDM link. It exposes an interface table describing each OCM port (subrack/slot/rx-port location) plus general status objects reporting table sizes and last-change timestamps. Its monitoring value is hardware-focused: it reports the operational/administrative state of each optical monitoring port and when that state last changed, letting an operator detect a failed or flapping OCM channel; the module description also flags a hardware durability constraint — polling faster than every ~50 seconds can wear out the internal optical switch before its rated 10-million-cycle lifetime. It is a self-contained optical-transport MIB, layered under the vendor's broader chassis/shelf MIB framework for subrack/slot addressing. It is deployed in DWDM optical transport nodes where operators rely on LUM-OCM-MIB SNMP monitoring to track per-channel optical power and wavelength health across amplified fiber links.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in LUM-OCM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Infinera-family DWDM optical transport node
  • Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) module

Monitoring Examples

An admin can poll ocmIfTable/ocmIfEntry indexed by ocmIfIndex, reading ocmIfSubrack, ocmIfSlot, and ocmIfRxPort to locate a specific optical monitor port, and check ocmGeneralStateLastChangeTime to see when its state last transitioned, flagging a recent optical channel fault. Because each read operation drives an internal optical switch, polling ocmIfTable more often than roughly every 50 seconds risks prematurely wearing out the switch's rated 10-million-cycle lifetime; ocmGeneralOcmIfTableSize and ocmGeneralOcmChannelTableSize let a monitoring system size its polling to the actual number of installed monitor ports and channels.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OCM port location (subrack/slot/rx-port)
  • port state last-change time
  • OCM interface table size
  • OCM channel table size
