Description: Monitors SmartOptics M-Series optical platform alarm status and event history.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MSERIES-ALARM-MIB?

MSERIES-ALARM-MIB is an enterprise-specific SNMP module for the SmartOptics M-Series optical transport platform, providing a general-purpose alarm management framework for the device. It exposes summary alarm state objects (last sequence number, highest active severity, counts of active and logged alarms) alongside a detailed active alarm table keyed by unit and port, carrying alarm text, severity, and activation time for each condition. Its monitoring focus is squarely on fault/hardware status: smartAlarmGeneralHighestSeverity gives an at-a-glance worst-case condition across the platform, while alarmActiveTable/alarmEntry lets an admin drill into exactly which unit/port raised which alarm, its severity, and when it activated, covering conditions such as optical signal loss or module faults on the transport shelf. As a transport/optical platform alarm MIB, it likely coexists with other SmartOptics M-Series MIBs covering optical performance and inventory, since this module is alarm-focused only. It is typically deployed by network operators managing SmartOptics M-Series DWDM/optical transport shelves in metro or access transport networks. Engineers can download the MSERIES-ALARM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MSERIES-ALARM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • SmartOptics M-Series optical transport platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator would first check smartAlarmGeneralHighestSeverity and smartAlarmGeneralNumberActiveList for a quick health summary, then walk alarmActiveTable/alarmEntry to read alarmUnit, alarmPort, alarmSeverity, and alarmText for each active condition, pinpointing e.g. a loss-of-signal alarm on a specific optical port. alarmActivationTime shows how long the condition has been active, helping distinguish a transient blip from a persistent hardware fault, and smartAlarmGeneralLastSeqNumber lets polling tools detect whether any new alarms have arrived since the last check. alarmNotifyPrefix indicates the notification branch used when these alarms are also sent as traps.

What Can Be Monitored

  • highest active alarm severity
  • active alarm count
  • active alarm list (unit/port/severity/text)
  • alarm activation time
  • alarm sequence number (for change detection)
