Description: HP ICF SNMP MIB for MAC address change notifications generating traps when MAC table entries change on HP ProCurve switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-ICF-MACNOTIFY-MIB?

HP-ICF-MACNOTIFY-MIB is an HP proprietary SNMP module in the HP ICF family for ProCurve/Aruba switches that manages MAC address change notifications, generating SNMP traps whenever entries in the switch's MAC address table are learned, moved, or removed. Its data is centered on trap/notification configuration rather than continuous counters, covering which VLANs or ports have notification enabled and the trap-generation interval. For monitoring purposes it supports fault and event detection on the switch, helping an operator track unexpected end-station moves, MAC flapping, or unauthorized device attachment, which is effectively a software-driven event-monitoring capability layered on switch hardware state. It depends conceptually on the standard Bridge-MIB's MAC address table (dot1dTpFdbTable) as the underlying data source it reports changes against. It is typically deployed in secure or regulated network environments where administrators need near-real-time alerts on MAC table churn, such as data centers or campus access layers, where HP-ICF-MACNOTIFY-MIB SNMP monitoring supports near-real-time alerting on MAC table churn.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-ICF-MACNOTIFY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP ProCurve switch
  • HP/Aruba networking switch

Monitoring Examples

The module's core function is to configure MAC-notification traps and their triggering interval; when enabled, the switch emits a trap identifying the VLAN, port, and MAC address involved in an add or delete event on the bridge forwarding table. An administrator would enable this feature on sensitive access ports and watch for unexpected traps indicating a new, unrecognized MAC address appearing, which could reveal a rogue device or a MAC-spoofing attempt. No sample objects were available in the source excerpt, so exact object names cannot be confirmed, but the functional scope is limited to notification configuration rather than broad performance metrics.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC address change notification enable state
  • notification interval
  • affected VLAN/port on MAC table change
  • MAC table add/delete events

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpicfMacNotifyLearnedCount OID:

Select an HP ProCurve/Aruba switch (MAC address change notification traps) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpicfMacNotifyLearnedCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports a count of MAC addresses learned by the MAC Address Table. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
