Description: Hirschmann HiOS (HM2) time synchronization MIB for NTP, SNTP, and IEEE 1588 PTP configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HM2-TIMESYNC-MIB?

HM2-TIMESYNC-MIB is a Hirschmann HiOS proprietary MIB managing time synchronization on Hirschmann switches, covering NTP/SNTP client and server configuration alongside IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) settings referenced in its description. It exposes the device's current UTC and local time, configured time source, and detailed SNTP server/client settings including broadcast mode address and port. Its monitoring value is verifying that device clocks remain accurate and synchronized, which is critical for correlating log timestamps, SNMP trap timing, and coordinating time-sensitive industrial protocols across a network; a stalled or unreachable time source directly undermines fault diagnosis elsewhere. It builds on standard NTP/SNTP (RFC 4330) and IEEE 1588 PTP protocols as its underlying time-sync mechanisms. It is deployed on Hirschmann industrial Ethernet switches in substations, factories, or transportation systems requiring tightly synchronized clocks. Engineers can download the HM2-TIMESYNC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HM2-TIMESYNC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Hirschmann HiOS industrial Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks hm2SystemUtcTime and hm2SystemTimeSource to confirm the switch has a valid, actively-synced time source, and hm2SystemLocalTime/hm2SystemLocalOffset to verify local time zone handling is correct. The hm2SntpServerAdminState and hm2SntpServerStatus objects show whether the SNTP client is enabled and successfully synchronizing, while hm2SntpServerBroadcastAdminState and hm2SntpServerBroadcastAddrType/Addr describe broadcast-mode time distribution settings. If hm2SntpServerStatus reports a failure, the admin knows switch logs and traps may carry drifting timestamps until the time source issue is resolved.

What Can Be Monitored

  • current UTC/local time
  • configured time source
  • SNTP client admin state and sync status
  • SNTP broadcast configuration

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hm2SystemTimeSource OID:

Select a Hirschmann HiOS industrial Ethernet switch (NTP/SNTP/PTP time sync) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hm2SystemTimeSource into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. Shows the source of the system time. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is 'local', since that means the device has fallen back to its own clock instead of an external time reference. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
