Description: Hirschmann HiOS (HM2) tracking MIB for interface and IP route tracking used in high-availability failover.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HM2-TRACKING-MIB?

HM2-TRACKING-MIB is a Hirschmann HiOS (HM2 platform) proprietary MIB for the Tracking feature, which monitors the operational state of interfaces or routes and can trigger failover actions elsewhere in the device (such as Link Backup) when a tracked object goes down. It exposes configuration for named tracking entries, their type (interface or route), and operational state, plus change-history counters. Its monitoring value centers on fault detection: hm2TrackOperState reports whether the tracked object is currently up or down, hm2TrackNumberOfChanges and hm2TrackTimeLastChange reveal flapping behavior over time, and hm2TrackSendStateChangeTrap governs whether a notification is sent on each transition. It is closely tied to other HM2 high-availability features like HM2-LINK-BACKUP-MIB, which can act on a track's state. It is deployed on Hirschmann industrial switches in redundant network designs where automated failover decisions depend on tracked interface or route health. Engineers can download the HM2-TRACKING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HM2-TRACKING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Hirschmann HiOS-based industrial Ethernet switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll hm2TrackingConfigTable/hm2TrackingConfigEntry, keyed by hm2TrackId, to check hm2TrackOperState for a tracked uplink interface. A rising hm2TrackNumberOfChanges combined with a recent hm2TrackTimeLastChange indicates the tracked interface is flapping, which could trigger unwanted failover events downstream. Checking hm2TrackSendStateChangeTrap confirms whether such transitions are actively alerting the management station.

What Can Be Monitored

  • tracked object operational state
  • number of state changes
  • time of last state change
  • state-change trap enable setting
  • tracked object type (interface/route)

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hm2TrackOperState OID:

Select a Hirschmann HiOS industrial switch (interface/route tracking for failover) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hm2TrackOperState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. Shows if the tracked object is currently up(1), down(2) or notReady(3). in case the state indicates notReady, the corresponding configuration is missing or invalid. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is 'down' or 'notReady', since 'notReady' means the corresponding configuration for this tracked object is missing or invalid. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
