Category: Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Monitors physical and virtual memory utilization across route processors and line cards on Ericsson routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ERICSSON-ROUTER-MEMORY-MIB?

ERICSSON-ROUTER-MEMORY-MIB monitors system memory usage across route processors, line cards, and software modules ("SMS" system management subsystem) on Ericsson SmartEdge/SM/SSR routers. It exposes two memory tables: one detailing per-module memory-manager statistics (free bytes, bytes in use, blocks in use, cumulative blocks allocated) and a general per-module memory table, both indexed by module identifier. This is squarely a hardware/software health-monitoring MIB: operators track eriRouterSmsMemoryFreeBytes and eriRouterSmsMemoryBytesInUse to catch memory exhaustion or leaks on a specific module before they cause process crashes or a card reload, and eriRouterMemoryMIBNotifications provides trap-based alerting on memory-related conditions. It's a standalone Ericsson MIB with no dependency on external memory-management standards, reflecting the router's internal SMS architecture. It's deployed on Ericsson SmartEdge/SSR routers in service-provider networks, where ERICSSON-ROUTER-MEMORY-MIB SNMP monitoring helps catch memory exhaustion on a line card or route processor before it risks a service-affecting reload.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ERICSSON-ROUTER-MEMORY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER)
  • Ericsson Smart Service Router (SSR)
  • Ericsson SM Metro Ethernet Service Transport platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls eriRouterSmsMemoryTable/eriRouterSmsMemoryEntry, indexed by eriRouterSmsMemoryIndex, comparing eriRouterSmsMemoryFreeBytes against eriRouterSmsMemoryBytesInUse for a given eriRouterSmsMemoryModule to spot a module trending toward exhaustion. A steadily rising eriRouterSmsMemoryCumulBlocks alongside falling free bytes on one module, without a corresponding traffic increase, suggests a memory leak in that module's software, and a resulting trap from eriRouterMemoryMIBNotifications would prompt proactive intervention before the module crashes.

What Can Be Monitored

  • free memory bytes per module
  • memory bytes in use
  • memory blocks in use
  • cumulative memory blocks allocated
  • memory usage notifications
