Category: Protocol: MPLS, Technology: VPN, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Extends the IETF MPLS L3VPN MIB with Ericsson-specific VRF, route target, and forwarding statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ERICSSON-ROUTER-MPLS-L3VPN-STD-EXT-MIB?

This is an Ericsson enterprise MIB for SmartEdge/SM/SSR routers that extends the standard IETF MPLS Layer-3 VPN MIB (RFC 4382) with vendor-specific objects for managing VRF route-target configuration. It exposes configuration data describing how route targets are attached to VPN routing/forwarding instances, complementing the base VPN routing and PE-CE interface objects defined in the standard MIB. Rather than hardware health, its monitoring value is operational/configuration correctness — verifying that VRF import/export route-target settings match intended VPN topology, which is essential to diagnosing misrouted or leaking VPN traffic. It explicitly builds on and depends on RFC 4382's MPLS-L3VPN-STD-MIB, which it supplements rather than replaces. It is deployed on Ericsson MPLS PE routers providing L3VPN services to enterprise or carrier customers. Engineers can download the ERICSSON-ROUTER-MPLS-L3VPN-STD-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ERICSSON-ROUTER-MPLS-L3VPN-STD-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson SmartEdge (MSER) router
  • Ericsson Smart Service Router (SSR)
  • Ericsson SM Metro Ethernet platform

Monitoring Examples

The eriRouterMplsL3VpnVrfRTTable/eriRouterMplsL3VpnVrfRTEntry rows expose per-VRF route-target entries via eriRouterMplsL3VpnVrfRTAddrFamily, eriRouterMplsL3VpnVrfRTType, eriRouterMplsL3VpnVrfRTIndex, eriRouterMplsL3VpnVrfRT, and eriRouterMplsL3VpnVrfRTDescr. An operator would poll this table to confirm that a customer VRF's import/export route targets match the intended VPN mesh, catching a misconfigured or missing route target that would silently break inter-site VPN reachability.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VRF route-target table entries
  • route-target address family (import/export)
  • route-target type and value
  • VRF route-target descriptions
