Category: Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Provides XPath-based alarm filter expressions for selective alarm subscription in Ericsson network management systems.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ERICSSON-ALARM-XPATH-MIB?

This MIB is an Ericsson-wide SNMP alarm interface, modeled on the 3GPP Alarm IRP and X.733, that adds XPath-based filter expressions so a management client can subscribe to a selective subset of alarm notifications rather than receiving the full alarm feed. It exposes summary counters of active alarms by severity (indeterminate through warning) plus per-notification objects carrying rich alarm detail such as additional text/info fields, resource identifiers, and record type. Its monitoring purpose is fault/status monitoring of Ericsson network elements: the severity summary counters give a quick health snapshot of a managed element, while the detailed notification objects (resource ID, additional info, record type) let an operator diagnose exactly what changed when an alarm is raised, cleared, or appended with more information. It is explicitly built on the 3GPP Alarm IRP specification and X.733 alarm model, and complements the related ERICSSON-ALARM-IRP-MIB and ERICSSON-ALARM-PC-MIB. It is deployed in Ericsson telecom network management systems, where ERICSSON-ALARM-XPATH-MIB SNMP monitoring lets operators filter which alarms are forwarded to a given monitoring station using XPath expressions.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ERICSSON-ALARM-XPATH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson telecom network element
  • Ericsson element manager/network management system

Monitoring Examples

An operator would monitor eriAlarmXSumCritical and eriAlarmXSumMajor for a quick severity-weighted health check of a network element, then, upon receiving an alarm notification, inspect eriAlarmXNObjResourceId and eriAlarmXNObjAdditionalText to identify the specific faulty resource and the human-readable fault description. eriAlarmXNObjAppendedAdditionalInfo would be checked to see whether new diagnostic information was appended to an already-active alarm, indicating an evolving fault condition rather than a new one.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active alarm counts by severity
  • alarm resource identifier
  • alarm additional text/info
  • alarm record type
  • appended additional info on active alarms

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using eriAlarmXSumIndeterminate OID:

Select an Ericsson telecom network element/element manager (XPath-filterable alarm subscription) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type eriAlarmXSumIndeterminate into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object shows the number of currently active alarms with perceived severity 'indeterminate'. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
