Description: Manages OTU2 (Optical Transport Unit level 2) section configuration and performance on Cyan platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CYAN-OTU2-MIB?

CYAN-OTU2-MIB is a proprietary MIB from Cyan Inc. (optical transport networking, now part of Ciena) covering the OTU2 (Optical Transport Unit level 2, per ITU-T G.709) section layer on Cyan's optical transport platforms. It exposes per-port optical transport configuration such as administrative and operational state, forward error correction (FEC) mode, and in-service soak timers, alongside real-time performance counters like FEC-correctable bit error counts per second. This is fundamentally a hardware/software status monitoring MIB for optical transport: cyanOTU2OperState and cyanOTU2OperStateQual reveal whether an optical port is actually passing traffic correctly, while cyanOTU2FecCorrectableBitErrorsCurrSec is a direct signal-quality indicator that flags a degrading fiber link or optical module before it causes a service outage. It is built on the ITU-T G.709 OTN standard for the OTU2 layer, so its object model is conceptually dependent on that standard even though implemented as a proprietary table. It is deployed in metro and long-haul optical transport networks using Cyan (Ciena) packet-optical platforms. Engineers can download the CYAN-OTU2-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CYAN-OTU2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cyan (Ciena) packet-optical transport platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll the cyanOTU2Table, using cyanOTU2ShelfId, cyanOTU2ModuleId, and cyanOTU2OTU2Id to identify a specific OTU2 port, then check cyanOTU2AdminState against cyanOTU2OperState to confirm the port is administratively up and actually operational. A rising cyanOTU2FecCorrectableBitErrorsCurrSec value alongside cyanOTU2RxFecErrorCorrection activity would indicate the optical signal is degrading and nearing the point where FEC can no longer fully correct errors, a leading indicator of an impending link failure.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OTU2 port admin/operational state
  • FEC-correctable bit error rate
  • forward error correction mode
  • in-service soak timer
  • receive FEC error correction activity
