Description: Monitors NBS optical transceiver parameters including power levels and wavelength.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NBS-OPTIC-MIB?
NBS-OPTIC-MIB is a vendor MIB from MRV Communications defining common fiber-optic port management objects shared across their NBS-series optical/transport product line. It exposes a per-port table describing each optical port's transmit and receive status, both administrative and operational, along with physical fiber characteristics such as connector type, fiber polish, and fiber mode. This is a hardware-status MIB focused on the health of optical interfaces: administrators use it to confirm whether an optical transmitter/receiver is administratively enabled and operationally up, which is critical for detecting a failed laser, a disconnected fiber, or a mismatched fiber type. It complements the IETF's standard interface MIBs by adding optical-specific detail not covered by generic ifTable objects, and works alongside other NBS-series MIBs like NBS-STATS-MIB for traffic counters on the same ports. It is deployed on MRV optical transport/media-conversion equipment in networks using fiber-optic links for transport or last-mile connectivity. Engineers can download the NBS-OPTIC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-OPTIC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- MRV optical transport/media-conversion equipment
- fiber-optic networking equipment
Monitoring Examples
An administrator polls nbsOpticPortTable, indexed by nbsOpticPortNdx, checking nbsOpticPortTxStatusOper and nbsOpticPortRxStatusOper against their administrative counterparts to detect an optical port that's enabled but not passing signal, indicating a fiber cut, dirty connector, or failed transceiver. Reviewing nbsOpticPortConnector, nbsOpticPortPolish, and nbsOpticPortFiberMode for a given port helps confirm a newly installed fiber patch matches the expected connector and fiber type before troubleshooting a signal-loss complaint further. A port stuck at TxStatusOper "down" while TxStatusAdmin remains "up" would immediately flag a transmitter hardware fault.
What Can Be Monitored
- optical port TX status (admin/oper)
- optical port RX status (admin/oper)
- fiber connector type
- fiber polish type
- fiber mode (single/multi-mode)
