Description: Monitors physical layer attributes of optical interfaces on Infinera equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is LUM-IFPHYSICAL-MIB?

LUM-IFPHYSICAL-MIB is an Infinera-related SNMP MIB covering the physical layer of optical interfaces, as described in ITU-T Recommendation G.709, on optical transport equipment. It exposes general administrative objects (table sizes and last-change timestamps) together with two hardware-focused tables: the transceiver (Trx) table describing each pluggable optical transceiver, and the cage table describing the physical cage/slot housing each transceiver. Its principal use is hardware status monitoring - tracking how many transceivers and cages are present (table sizes) and when their configuration or operational state last changed, which lets an operator detect a pulled, failed, or newly inserted optical transceiver module. It aligns with the ITU-T G.709 physical layer specification as its normative dependency rather than standard IETF interface MIBs like IF-MIB, though conceptually it parallels the Entity/Physical inventory model. It is deployed on Infinera DWDM/OTN network elements to give operators visibility into the physical optics inventory and status underlying each logical interface. Engineers can download the LUM-IFPHYSICAL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in LUM-IFPHYSICAL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Infinera optical transport network element (transceivers/optical modules)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll ifPhysicalGeneralIfPhysicalTrxTableSize to see how many transceivers are currently recognized, and walk ifPhysicalTrxTable/ifPhysicalTrxEntry by ifPhysicalTrxIndex to read each ifPhysicalTrxName and check for state changes via ifPhysicalGeneralIfPhysicalTrxStateLastChangeTime, revealing when a transceiver was removed or reseated. Similarly, ifPhysicalGeneralIfPhysicalCageTableSize and its associated last-change timestamps flag when a cage/slot's physical presence status has changed, useful for correlating a sudden link-down event with a hardware removal.

What Can Be Monitored

  • transceiver table size and inventory
  • transceiver name/identity
  • transceiver state last-change time
  • cage/slot table size
  • cage state last-change time
