Category: Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Monitors Cabletron FPS (Frame Processing System) hardware status, processing load, and frame forwarding statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTFPS-MIB?

The CTFPS-MIB is a Cabletron Systems (later Enterasys) proprietary module for the Frame Processing System (FPS), a hardware forwarding/switching subsystem used in Cabletron's high-end switching platforms. It exposes data about FPS ports, port clusters, and the internal DMA and buffer-allocation frame engines (DMAF/BAF) that handle packet forwarding within the switch fabric. This MIB is used to monitor the hardware health and processing load of the frame-forwarding ASICs, with administrators watching per-port and per-cluster forwarding statistics to detect overload, buffer exhaustion, or hardware faults in the forwarding engine. It complements standard interface (IF-MIB) and bridge (BRIDGE-MIB) monitoring by providing switch-internal, chipset-level visibility not available through standards-based MIBs. It is deployed on legacy Cabletron/Enterasys enterprise switches that use the FPS forwarding architecture. Engineers can download the CTFPS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTFPS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron/Enterasys enterprise switches with FPS forwarding hardware

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the fpsPort and fpsCluster objects to check per-port and per-cluster forwarding activity, and inspect fpsDMAF and fpsBAF counters to gauge DMA frame and buffer allocation frame throughput within the switch's forwarding hardware. A rising count of dropped or errored frames reported through fpsDMAF/fpsBAF relative to fpsPort traffic would signal internal buffer exhaustion or a failing forwarding ASIC. Because sample object detail is limited to these four names, the exact table/index structure cannot be fully confirmed from the source, though the naming pattern implies per-port and per-cluster grouping.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port forwarding activity
  • per-cluster forwarding load
  • DMA frame processing (DMAF)
  • buffer allocation frame processing (BAF)
