Category: Quality of Service, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Extends Cabletron traffic priority management with additional classification criteria and queue mappings.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTRON-PRIORITY-EXTENSIONS-MIB?

CTRON-PRIORITY-EXTENSIONS-MIB is a Cabletron (later Enterasys) vendor MIB extending traffic priority management on Cabletron switches, adding MAC-based classification on top of standard queue prioritization. It exposes configuration and status data per slot/interface: the number of transmit priority queues, MAC-based priority classification enable status, and MAC address table entries with associated packet-type classification. Its monitoring role is software/configuration status oriented: administrators check ctPriorityExtNumTXQueues and ctPriorityExtMACStatus to confirm priority queuing and MAC-based classification are active as configured, and use ctPriorityExtNumMACEntries versus its maximum to see if the classification table is nearing capacity. It extends Cabletron's core priority/queueing model and implicitly relates to standard 802.1p/802.1Q priority concepts, though it is not a direct extension of an IETF MIB. It is deployed on Cabletron/Enterasys switches in enterprise LANs using MAC-based traffic prioritization for QoS differentiation, where administrators reference the CTRON-PRIORITY-EXTENSIONS-MIB OID tree when polling the classification tables.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-PRIORITY-EXTENSIONS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron/Enterasys switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin would check ctPriorityExtTXQueueTable's ctPriorityExtNumTXQueues per ctPriorityExtSlotNum/ctPriorityExtInterfaceNum to confirm the expected number of priority queues is provisioned on a given port. ctPriorityExtMACStatus and ctPriorityExtNumMACEntries versus ctPriorityExtMaxNumMACEntries would be polled to detect if MAC-based classification is enabled and whether the table is approaching its capacity limit, which would silently drop new classification entries if exceeded. ctPriorityExtMaxNumPktTypesPerMACEntry would be checked when troubleshooting why a MAC entry isn't classifying all expected packet types.

What Can Be Monitored

  • transmit priority queue count per interface
  • MAC-based priority classification status
  • MAC classification table entry count vs. maximum
  • packet types classified per MAC entry
