What Is CISCO-OTV-MIB?

CISCO-OTV-MIB manages Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV), a Cisco data-center-interconnect technology that extends Layer 2 domains across separate sites over an IP, Layer 2, Layer 3, or label-switched transport infrastructure. It belongs to the data-center networking/DCI (data center interconnect) technology area, exposing configuration and state for OTV sites, site VLANs, and overlay instances. Its data spans configuration (site ID, overlay VPN name) and operational/fault status: cotvSiteVlanState and cotvOverlayVpnState report whether the site's OTV control-plane VLAN and each overlay are up, while cotvOverlayVpnDownReason gives a specific fault cause when an overlay is down—key for diagnosing DCI outages between data centers. cotvOverlayVlansExtendedFirst2k/Second2k track which VLANs (across the full 4K range) are actually being extended over a given overlay. This MIB is Cisco-proprietary but builds on standard Layer 2/Layer 3 overlay networking concepts, and is deployed on Cisco Nexus data-center switches interconnecting geographically separate data centers for stretched VLANs and disaster-recovery/live-migration use cases. Monitoring Examples

A data-center network engineer checks cotvOverlayTable/cotvOverlayEntry for cotvOverlayVpnState on the OTV overlay connecting two sites, and if it shows down, reads cotvOverlayVpnDownReason to determine whether the underlying transport network or the OTV control-plane adjacency failed. Cross-referencing cotvSiteVlanState confirms whether the local site VLAN used for OTV control-plane communication (typically over multicast or unicast-mode adjacency) is itself operational, isolating whether the fault is local or remote.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cotvSiteVlanState OID:

Select a Cisco data center switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cotvSiteVlanState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object indicates the state of OTV site VLAN. 'up' - OTV site VLAN is up 'down' - OTV site VLAN is down. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'up', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
