Category: Cisco Devices, Quality of Service, Wireless and WLAN

Description: Extends 802.11 QoS management with Cisco-specific enhancements for wireless LAN quality-of-service parameters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IETF-DOT11-QOS-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-IETF-DOT11-QOS-EXT-MIB is a Cisco vendor MIB (registered under ciscoExperiment) that extends the base CISCO-IETF-DOT11-QOS-MIB, itself modeled on the draft IEEE 802.11e QoS specification, with additional Cisco-specific wireless QoS attributes. It defines cid11QosExtConfigTable (per-radio, per-traffic-category backoff offset and max retry settings), cid11QosExtIfConfigTable (whether QoS queueing is enabled on a given 802.11 interface), cid11QosExtVlanTable (traffic-category classification per VLAN, augmenting CISCO-WLAN-VLAN-MIB's VLAN table), and cid11QosExtQueueTable (per-category priority queue bandwidth quota out of a shared pool of 12). It also defines a ciscoIetfDot11QosExtChangeNotif notification, controllable via cid11QosExtNotifEnabled, fired whenever QoS configuration changes in either this MIB or the base QoS MIB. As a configuration-focused MIB it is most useful for confirming that QoS is enabled and correctly classifying traffic on wireless interfaces and VLANs rather than for raw traffic counters. It depends on CISCO-IETF-DOT11-QOS-MIB and CISCO-WLAN-VLAN-MIB for shared objects and is deployed on Cisco wireless access points/bridges implementing early 802.11e-based QoS. Wireless engineers reference the CISCO-IETF-DOT11-QOS-EXT-MIB MIB Browser view when auditing QoS configuration on legacy Cisco WLAN gear.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IETF-DOT11-QOS-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco 802.11 wireless access points and bridges (802.11e QoS-capable)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls cid11QosExtIfConfigTable (indexed by ifIndex) to confirm cid11QosExtOptionEnabled is true on a wireless interface, then checks cid11QosExtVlanClassOfService for the voice VLAN; a voice VLAN classified as bestEffort instead of interactiveVoice would indicate a QoS misconfiguration causing voice traffic to compete unprioritized with data traffic.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-radio backoff offset and max retry configuration
  • QoS enable/disable state per wireless interface
  • VLAN traffic-category (class of service) classification
  • priority queue bandwidth quota per traffic category
  • QoS configuration-change notifications
