Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage
Description: Provides management objects for configuring and managing Fibre Channel device aliases (human-readable names for WWNs) on Cisco MDS switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-FC-DEVICE-ALIAS-MIB?
CISCO-FC-DEVICE-ALIAS-MIB manages Fibre Channel device aliases on Cisco MDS SAN switches, letting administrators assign human-readable names to the cryptic 8-byte World Wide Names (WWNs) used to identify disks, hosts, and switches in a Fibre Channel fabric. It exposes configuration data mapping a device alias to a device type, device ID (WWN), and row status for creating/deleting alias entries. This is a configuration/naming MIB rather than a fault or performance MIB, so its monitoring value is in verifying that device aliases are correctly and consistently provisioned across the fabric so that other management tools display meaningful names instead of raw WWNs. It is Fibre Channel fabric-specific and works alongside other Cisco FC management MIBs but has no dependency on general IETF standards beyond basic SNMP conventions. It is deployed on Cisco MDS 9000 series Fibre Channel SAN switches, and administrators can perform a CISCO-FC-DEVICE-ALIAS-MIB download to load its object definitions directly into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FC-DEVICE-ALIAS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switches
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would walk cfdaConfigTable/cfdaConfigEntry to confirm each cfdaConfigDeviceAlias maps to the expected cfdaConfigDeviceId (WWN) and cfdaConfigDeviceType, and check cfdaConfigRowStatus to verify an alias entry is active rather than left in a notReady state. A missing or mismatched alias entry would explain why a host or disk appears unnamed in fabric-wide management views.
What Can Be Monitored
- device alias to WWN mapping
- device type per alias
- alias entry row status
