Description: Manages physical port configuration, state, and statistics on Ciena CES Carrier Ethernet switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CIENA-CES-PORT-MIB?
CIENA-CES-PORT-MIB is a vendor MIB for Ciena's Carrier Ethernet Switching (CES) platform, providing detailed configuration, operational state, and statistics for physical and logical Ethernet ports. It exposes categories of data spanning port administrative/operational configuration (speed, loopback mode), logical port state including down-reason diagnostics, QoS ingress classification (RCoS profiles and policies), and mirroring configuration for traffic monitoring. For hardware/software status monitoring it is particularly valuable for fault diagnosis via multiple ranked "last down reason" objects and a masked-down-reason object that explain why a logical port went down, alongside facility loopback state used during test/turn-up. It builds on standard Ethernet/interface concepts (implicitly related to IF-MIB-style port indexing) while adding Ciena-specific QoS and diagnostic extensions. It is typically deployed on Ciena CES carrier Ethernet switches used by service providers for Carrier Ethernet access and aggregation services. Engineers can download the CIENA-CES-PORT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-CES-PORT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ciena CES Carrier Ethernet switch
Monitoring Examples
An operator troubleshooting a flapping circuit would poll cienaCesLogicalPortLastDownReason2 and cienaCesLogicalPortLastDownReason3 alongside cienaCesLogicalPortMaskedDownReason to build a history of why a logical port dropped, distinguishing a masked/expected event (e.g., maintenance loopback) from a genuine fault. cienaCesLogicalPortFacilityLoopback would be checked to confirm a port isn't stuck in test loopback mode after turn-up, and cienaCesPortAdminSpeed would be compared against the negotiated operational speed to catch a mismatch. cienaCesPortIngressRcosProfileId/Name and cienaCesPortIngressRcosPolicy let an admin verify the correct QoS classification profile is applied to a customer-facing port.
What Can Be Monitored
- port administrative speed
- logical port down reasons
- masked down reason
- facility loopback state
- ingress RCoS profile/policy
- port mirroring configuration
