Description: Defines managed objects for the CAPWAP protocol binding for IEEE 802.11, providing WLAN profile binding and BSS interface management.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CAPWAP-DOT11-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CAPWAP-DOT11-MIB?

CAPWAP-DOT11-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 5834) that defines the CAPWAP protocol binding specific to IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, extending the base CAPWAP-BASE-MIB with 802.11 WLAN profile and BSS (Basic Service Set) management objects. It exposes a WLAN profile table describing MAC mode (split/local) and tunneling mode per WLAN, and a binding table associating each WLAN profile with the ifIndex-based BSS interface it is mapped onto, along with row-status for provisioning changes. Its monitoring focus is configuration/software-state oriented, letting an operator confirm which WLAN profiles are active, how they are bound to radio BSS interfaces, and whether their MAC/tunnel mode matches intended deployment, useful for diagnosing why an SSID isn't broadcasting on an expected access point. It explicitly depends on CAPWAP-BASE-MIB for the underlying WTP/session model and reuses its ifIndex-based interface conventions. It is deployed on wireless LAN controllers (Access Controllers) managing CAPWAP-based 802.11 access points. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the CAPWAP-DOT11-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CAPWAP-DOT11-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • wireless LAN controller (Access Controller) managing 802.11 CAPWAP access points

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check capwapDot11WlanTable/capwapDot11WlanEntry for capwapDot11WlanMacType and capwapDot11WlanTunnelMode per capwapDot11WlanProfileId to confirm whether a WLAN is running in split or local MAC mode as intended. Reviewing capwapDot11WlanBindTable's capwapDot11WlanBindWlanId to capwapDot11WlanBindBssIfIndex mapping reveals whether a given WLAN profile is actually bound to the expected radio interface, an unexpected or missing binding would explain an SSID not appearing on a specific AP. Checking capwapDot11WlanRowStatus and capwapDot11WlanBindRowStatus confirms whether recent provisioning changes have been fully applied (active) or are still pending.

What Can Be Monitored
