Description: Aruba wired switch ArubaOS-CX loop protection detection and port shutdown management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ARUBAWIRED-LOOPPROTECT-MIB?

ARUBAWIRED-LOOPPROTECT-MIB is an HP/HPE proprietary extension of the standard Loop Protect MIB concept, implemented for ArubaOS-CX wired switches. It exposes per-port loop-detection configuration and status, including whether loop protection is enabled on a port and whether that port has been automatically shut down after a loop was detected. Its monitoring value is chiefly fault/software-behavior oriented: it lets an operator see when the switch's software has taken protective action, such as disabling a port, in response to a detected Ethernet loop, which is a key early-warning signal distinct from raw hardware health but still central to keeping the device operational. The module explicitly builds on the conventions of "standard Loop Protect MIBs," indicating alignment with prior vendor loop-protection MIB structures rather than an IETF standard. It is deployed on Aruba CX switches in enterprise and campus LANs to prevent broadcast storms from accidental cabling loops, with NOC staff monitoring for auto-disabled ports. Engineers can download the ARUBAWIRED-LOOPPROTECT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ARUBAWIRED-LOOPPROTECT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Aruba CX series wired switches
  • ArubaOS-CX network switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls the per-port loop-protect status objects to see which interfaces currently have loop protection enabled and whether any port has transitioned to a shut-down state after a loop was detected. A port that flips to the shut-down status shortly after a patch-panel change points to an accidental physical loop introduced during cabling work. Comparing the loop-protect shutdown status against the standard interface operational status (ifOperStatus) confirms the port was disabled by this feature rather than a cable or NIC fault, and the port can be manually re-enabled once the loop is removed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port loop detection enable/status
  • automatic port shutdown due to loop
  • loop protection configuration
  • port re-enable/recovery state

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using arubaWiredLoopProtectPortLoopCount OID:

Select an Aruba CX network switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type arubaWiredLoopProtectPortLoopCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object provides the number of loops detected on a Loop Protection enabled port. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
