What Is SMON-MIB?
SMON-MIB (RFC 3577, the Switch Monitoring MIB) is a vendor-neutral IETF standard that extends the RMON (Remote Monitoring) family to switched, VLAN-aware Ethernet networks. It exposes data-source capability information, per-VLAN traffic statistics, IEEE 802.1p priority-level counters, and remote port-mirroring ("port copy") configuration for switch ports. It is used primarily for traffic and performance visibility — tracking per-VLAN packet/octet counts and utilization — and indirectly reflects switch fabric load and whether monitoring/mirroring features are functioning correctly. It is explicitly an extension of RFC 2819 RMON-MIB and depends on it for base statistics-group definitions. It is deployed on managed Ethernet switches, particularly in enterprise and carrier environments needing VLAN-level traffic analysis via SNMP without a dedicated RMON probe. Administrators researching the SMON-MIB RFC will find its full specification in RFC 3577, which formally defines these VLAN-aware extensions to the base RMON standard.

Monitoring Examples
An admin can poll smonVlanStatsControlTable/smonVlanStatsControlEntry to see which VLANs (via smonVlanStatsControlDataSource) have statistics collection enabled, and cross-reference dataSourceCapsTable/dataSourceCapsEntry (keyed by dataSourceCapsIfIndex) to confirm which interfaces support RMON and mirroring capabilities (dataSourceRmonCaps, dataSourceCopyCaps). A sudden drop in traffic reported for a specific VLAN stats entry, while other VLANs on the same port stay steady, would indicate a VLAN-specific problem such as a misconfigured trunk or a spanning-tree block.

The number of entries and the types of port copies (1-1, many-1, 1-many) are implementation specific and could possibly be dynamic due to changing resource availability. In order to configure a source to destination portCopy relationship, both source and destination interfaces MUST be present as an ifEntry in the ifTable and their respective ifAdminStatus and ifOperStatus values MUST be equal to 'up(1)'. If the value of any of those two objects changes after the portCopyEntry is activated, portCopyStatus will transition to 'notReady(3)'. The capability of an interface to be source or destination of a port copy operation is described by the 'copySourcePort(0)' and 'copyDestPort(1)' bits in dataSourceCopyCaps.
