What Is ARUBAWIRED-RPVST-MIB?

ARUBAWIRED-RPVST-MIB is an HPE/Aruba Networking enterprise MIB (under the wndFeatures OID arc) that models Rapid Per-VLAN Spanning Tree (RPVST, a rapid spanning tree instance run independently per VLAN, interoperable with legacy Cisco PVST+) on Aruba CX-family wired switches. It exposes global RPVST behavior scalars such as arubaWiredRpvstPathCostMode (802.1d/802.1t/proprietary cost calculation), arubaWiredRpvstExtendedSystemID, arubaWiredRpvstBpduGuardTimeout, and arubaWiredRpvstMstpInterconnectVlan (the VLAN used to bridge an RPVST domain into an MSTP domain), alongside a per-VLAN arubaWiredRpvstVlanTable carrying arubaWiredRpvstVlanHelloTime/ForwardDelay/MaxAge/Priority, arubaWiredRpvstVlanRoot, arubaWiredRpvstVlanRpvstAdminStatus, and reset-counter controls. Because RPVST determines the active forwarding topology per VLAN, this data is central to detecting topology instability — administrators watch for unexpected root-bridge changes, per-VLAN inconsistency reasons, or repeated counter resets indicating flapping links or misconfigured point-to-point/edge-port settings. An operator polls arubaWiredRpvstVlanTable for a given VLAN to check arubaWiredRpvstVlanRoot and arubaWiredRpvstVlanRootPathCost, confirming the expected switch holds the root role; an unexpected change in arubaWiredRpvstVlanRoot combined with an active port/VLAN inconsistency reason on a trunk port would indicate a PVID mismatch or a rogue bridge contending for root on that VLAN.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using arubaWiredRpvstVlanRootChangeCounter OID:

Select an Aruba (HPE) ArubaOS-CX wired switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type arubaWiredRpvstVlanRootChangeCounter into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of times the root has changed for this VLAN. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
