What Is ALTEON-CHEETAH-LAYER4-MIB?

ALTEON-CHEETAH-LAYER4-MIB is Alteon Networks' (later Nortel/Radware) proprietary Layer-4 MIB for the Cheetah-based Application Switch line, used for server load balancing and health checking of backend servers. It exposes configuration for real server pools (weights, connection limits, timeouts) alongside layer-4 statistics and general information objects. Its key monitoring role is software/service status: real-server health-check parameters (ping interval, fail/success retry counts) reveal whether a backend server has been marked down, and connection/weight settings show how traffic is being distributed - directly surfacing backend application outages or overload. It is a proprietary Alteon OS MIB that layers on top of standard interface concepts but is not derived from an IETF load-balancing standard. It is typically deployed on data-center load balancers front-ending web or application server farms. Engineers can download the ALTEON-CHEETAH-LAYER4-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

slbCurCfgRealServerTable/slbCurCfgRealServerEntry (indexed by slbCurCfgRealServerIndex) exposes slbCurCfgRealServerIpAddr, slbCurCfgRealServerWeight, and slbCurCfgRealServerMaxConns, letting an admin confirm load is being distributed as configured across real servers. slbCurCfgRealServerPingInterval together with slbCurCfgRealServerFailRetry and slbCurCfgRealServerSuccRetry defines the health-check cadence and thresholds; a real server that repeatedly fails these checks would be flagged, revealing a backend outage before it affects users.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using slbStatMaintTerminatedSessions OID:

Select an Alteon (Nortel/Radware) Cheetah-based application switch (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type slbStatMaintTerminatedSessions into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The count of the number of sessions closed because the server failed. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
