What Is AIRESPACE-SWITCHING-MIB?
AIRESPACE-SWITCHING-MIB is a MIB originally from Airespace (acquired by Cisco) for wireless LAN controllers acting as Central Controllers that terminate the LWAPP tunnel from lightweight access points. It covers switching-layer configuration such as VLAN membership/quarantine settings and per-port switching statistics, alongside the controller's broader role of exposing inventory, memory, CPU, and trap-log information as described in its module text. For hardware/software status monitoring, it supports checking controller CPU and memory load, inventory/hardware identification, and trap history, in addition to port-level switching statistics that reveal traffic anomalies. It is tied to the LWAPP architecture and complements companion Airespace/Cisco wireless MIBs covering AP and radio status. It is deployed on Airespace/Cisco wireless LAN controllers (the predecessor to Cisco's Unified Wireless Network controllers) managing fleets of lightweight access points, and the AIRESPACE-SWITCHING-MIB MIB Browser view lets administrators inspect these switching-layer objects directly.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AIRESPACE-SWITCHING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. Monitoring Examples
An administrator would check agentInterfaceVlanQuarantine to confirm which VLAN is used to quarantine a management interface or misbehaving client traffic, and poll portStatsTable/portStatsEntry to review per-port switching statistics on the controller's physical uplink/downlink ports for error or utilization anomalies. Because the module description also references controller memory, CPU, and trap logs, an admin would correlate port-level stats with overall controller resource load when diagnosing wireless performance issues.

The MNs communicate with the APs through the protocol defined by the 802.11 standard. LWAPP APs, upon bootup, discover and join one of the controllers and the controller pushes the configuration, that includes the WLAN parameters, to the LWAPP APs. The APs then encapsulate all the 802.11 frames from wireless clients inside LWAPP frames and forward the LWAPP frames to the controller. GLOSSARY Access Point ( AP ) An entity that contains an 802.11 medium access control ( MAC ) and physical layer ( PHY ) interface and provides access to the distribution services via the wireless medium for associated clients. LWAPP APs encapsulate all the 802.11 frames in LWAPP frames and sends it to the controller to which it is logically connected. Basic Service Set Identifier (BSSID) The identifier for the service set comprising of all the 802.11 stations under the control of one coordinating Access Point. This identifier happens to be the MAC address of the dot11 radio interface of the Access Point. The wireless clients that associate with the Access Point get the wired uplink through this particular dot11 interface.
