What Is A3COM-LIC-R1-MIB?
Despite its name suggesting software licensing, the objects actually defined in A3COM-LIC-R1-MIB configure the IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control (LLC) sublayer on 3Com bridge/router products, covering per-port LLC administrative parameters like maximum SAPs, maximum connections, maximum PDU size, and various LLC timers for acknowledgment, P-bit, and reject handling. It is a configuration-focused MIB rather than a counters MIB, defining administrative limits for LLC Type 2 connection-oriented service used by legacy protocols such as SNA and NetBIOS. Its monitoring value is in confirming the software configuration of the LLC layer per port, since verifying llcPortAdminMaxRetransmits, llcPortAdminAckTimer, and similar values are set correctly is important for diagnosing why LLC-based sessions such as DLSw or SNA circuits time out or fail to establish. It belongs to the same 3Com bridge/router MIB family as related MIBs and complements bridging/DLSw-related modules rather than a formal IETF standard. It is deployed on legacy 3Com bridge/router products that still carry SNA or NetBIOS traffic requiring LLC Type 2 connections, and administrators troubleshooting these older platforms can do an A3COM-LIC-R1-MIB download to load its object definitions directly into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples
An admin walks llcPortAdminTable/llcPortAdminEntry, keyed by llcPortAdminName, to confirm llcPortAdminMaxSaps and llcPortAdminMaxCcs are sized adequately for the number of concurrent LLC sessions a port needs to support. If SNA sessions are timing out, checking llcPortAdminAckTimer, llcPortAdminRejTimer, and llcPortAdminMaxRetransmits against the values expected by the attached SNA gateway can reveal a timer mismatch causing repeated retransmissions.
