Category: Wellfleet BayNetworks System Management

Description: Monitors Wellfleet ASR (Automatic System Recovery) parameters and recovery event statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Wellfleet-ASR-MIB?

The Wellfleet-ASR-MIB is a private-enterprise MIB from Wellfleet Communications (the router vendor that later became part of Bay Networks/Nortel) covering the Automatic System Recovery (ASR) feature on its multiprotocol routers. It exposes configuration objects that define how the router's watchdog and diagnostic logic detect abnormal conditions, along with test and event objects used to trigger or verify recovery actions. Because ASR governs how the device responds to internal failures, this MIB is fundamentally a software/firmware health-monitoring facility: it lets an operator confirm the router's self-recovery mechanism is armed, review whether a recovery test has been created and run, and correlate recovery events with unexpected reboots or hangs. It is a self-contained Wellfleet proprietary MIB with no strong dependency on IETF standard MIBs beyond the base SNMP framework. It is deployed on legacy Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers in enterprise or carrier backbones where unattended, remote recovery from software faults was a design requirement long before modern watchdog/reload standards existed. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-ASR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-ASR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet router
  • Bay Networks/Nortel multiprotocol router

Monitoring Examples

An operator provisions a recovery check by creating an entry via wfAsrBaseCreate, which instantiates a row in the ASR base configuration table controlling the recovery mechanism's default behavior. To validate the mechanism without waiting for a real fault, they use wfAsrTestCreate to spawn a test entry under wfAsrTest, forcing a simulated failure/recovery cycle. Polling wfAsrBase afterward confirms whether the router logged and handled the simulated event correctly, and repeated unexpected transitions in this table across polling cycles would indicate the router is silently rebooting on its own.

What Can Be Monitored

  • automatic recovery configuration status
  • recovery test creation state
  • simulated failure/recovery events
  • watchdog/self-recovery armament
