What Is Wellfleet-COMMON-MIB?

Wellfleet-COMMON-MIB is a legacy enterprise MIB from Wellfleet Communications (later part of Bay Networks, then Nortel) that provides common objects shared across Wellfleet router modules, including base system identity, hardware configuration, software configuration, and line-level information. It exposes categories of data spanning system identification (wfSystem), hardware configuration inventory (wfHardwareConfig), software configuration and version details (wfSoftwareConfig), and per-line/interface information (wfLine), alongside its root registration objects (wellfleet, wfSwSeries7). In terms of hardware/software status monitoring, this module is used to confirm which hardware configuration and software version/series a Wellfleet router is running (wfSwSeries7 suggests Series 7 router software), and to check line-level status for its serial/WAN interfaces. As a legacy proprietary enterprise MIB predating widespread SMIv2 adoption, it likely depends on SMIv1 conventions (RFC1155-SMI/RFC-1212) rather than modern SNMPv2 textual conventions. It is deployed specifically on legacy Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers, which are largely historical/end-of-life platforms still occasionally found in older network environments, and loading Wellfleet-COMMON-MIB in a MIB Browser remains a practical way to inspect its wfSystem, wfHardwareConfig, and wfSoftwareConfig objects on surviving equipment.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-COMMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • system identity
  • hardware configuration inventory
  • software version/series
  • line/interface status

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet/Bay Networks/Nortel legacy routers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll wfSystem objects to confirm the router's identity and wfSoftwareConfig to verify which software version/series is loaded, cross-referencing wfSwSeries7 to confirm Series 7 code is running rather than an older release. They would also check wfHardwareConfig to inventory installed hardware modules and wfLine to check the status of a specific WAN or serial line, revealing whether a line is down or misconfigured.
