Category: Ciena LEOS Carrier Ethernet

Description: Manages Ciena LEOS traffic flow classification, metering, and per-flow statistics for service quality enforcement.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is WWP-LEOS-FLOW-MIB?

WWP-LEOS-FLOW-MIB is a Ciena (originally World Wide Packets, WWP) proprietary SNMP module for the LEOS operating system used on Ciena's Ethernet access/aggregation switches, covering traffic-flow classification, metering, and per-flow statistics used for service-quality enforcement, and it is explicitly shared between the 4.x and 6.x LEOS platform releases. It exposes objects for MAC-motion event detection (tracking a MAC address seen moving between ports/VLANs), CPU rate-limiting pass statistics, and flow-level attributes such as the old/new port and VLAN a MAC address moved between. As a software/network-behavior MIB, it is used to monitor for MAC-motion events that can indicate a switching loop, misconfigured redundancy, or a spoofing/duplication problem, and to track CPU-directed traffic rate-limiting (RAPS-related) to confirm control-plane protection is functioning under load. It does not appear to depend on external standard MIBs, being a fully proprietary LEOS extension, though RAPS in its object names implies interaction with ITU-T G.8032 Ring Automatic Protection Switching concepts. It is typically deployed on Ciena/World Wide Packets carrier Ethernet access switches used in metro Ethernet or ring-protected access networks, where WWP-LEOS-FLOW-MIB SNMP monitoring provides visibility into MAC-motion events and control-plane traffic behavior.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WWP-LEOS-FLOW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ciena (World Wide Packets) LEOS-based carrier Ethernet access/aggregation switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would enable wwpLeosFlowMacMotionEventsEnable and set wwpLeosFlowMacMotionEventsInterval, then watch for notifications carrying wwpLeosFlowMacMotionAttrMacAddr along with wwpLeosFlowMacMotionAttrOldPort/wwpLeosFlowMacMotionAttrOldVlan versus wwpLeosFlowMacMotionAttrNewPort/wwpLeosFlowMacMotionAttrNewVlan to detect a MAC address flapping rapidly between ports, a classic symptom of a Layer 2 loop. Separately, polling wwpLeosFlowCpuRateLimitStatsRapsPassed would show how many RAPS control-plane packets were allowed through the CPU rate limiter, helping confirm ring-protection signaling isn't being throttled during a network event.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC motion events (old/new port and VLAN)
  • MAC motion detection enable state and interval
  • CPU rate-limit pass statistics for RAPS traffic
