Category: Ciena LEOS Carrier Ethernet

Description: Manages Ciena LEOS broadcast traffic containment thresholds and rate limiting per port for storm control.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is WWP-LEOS-BROADCAST-CONTAINMENT-MIB?

WWP-LEOS-BROADCAST-CONTAINMENT-MIB is a proprietary MIB from World Wide Packets (later part of Ciena), running on their LEOS switch operating system, for configuring broadcast traffic containment (storm control) on a per-port basis. It exposes per-port broadcast rate thresholds and the resulting containment/alarm state when those thresholds are exceeded. Its monitoring role centers on traffic-threshold and alarm status rather than physical component health: a port entering a containment/alarm state signals it is being hit with excessive broadcast traffic, which can indicate a loop, a misbehaving host, or an attack. It complements the standard IF-MIB for identifying which physical interface a given containment configuration and alarm applies to. It is deployed on Ciena/WWP LEOS-based Ethernet switches used in carrier Ethernet access networks where broadcast storms need to be contained per-customer or per-port. Engineers can download the WWP-LEOS-BROADCAST-CONTAINMENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WWP-LEOS-BROADCAST-CONTAINMENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ciena (WWP) LEOS-based Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided for this module, so a concrete polling scenario with real object names cannot be constructed; consistent with its stated purpose, monitoring would involve checking each port's configured broadcast rate threshold against its current containment/alarm status, with a port entering an alarmed state flagging a broadcast storm on that segment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port broadcast rate threshold configuration
  • broadcast containment/alarm status
  • storm control enable state
