Category: Ciena LEOS Carrier Ethernet

Description: Manages Ciena LEOS Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol instance configuration, port roles, and topology state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is WWP-LEOS-MSTP-MIB?

This Ciena/WWP LEOS Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) MIB manages Layer-2 loop-prevention topology on LEOS-based Metro Ethernet switches, covering bridge-wide parameters, per-port configuration, and topology/port-role state. It exposes configuration data (bridge enable, force version, timers, max hops, path cost defaults, global STP mode) alongside per-port operational tables and notification objects for topology events. Monitoring it reveals the software-level spanning-tree health of the switch: whether MSTP is enabled, current port roles, and whether a loopback-block condition or unexpected topology-change notification has occurred, which is critical to detecting network loops or link flaps. It implements/extends the IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree standard built on 802.1D/802.1w spanning-tree concepts. It is deployed on Metro Ethernet access/aggregation switches where multiple VLANs need independent loop-prevention topologies. Engineers can download the WWP-LEOS-MSTP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WWP-LEOS-MSTP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ciena/World Wide Packets Metro Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll wwpLeosMstpPortCfgTable/wwpLeosMstpPortCfgEntry to check per-port MSTP configuration and role, and monitor wwpLeosMstpBridgeEnable and wwpLeosMstpGlobalStpMode to confirm spanning tree is active as expected. Timers such as wwpLeosMstpForwardDelay, wwpLeosMstpHelloTime, and wwpLeosMstpMaxAge would be checked against defaults to rule out misconfiguration causing slow convergence, while an unexpectedly set wwpLeosMstpLoopbackBlock flag or a trap from wwpLeosMstpNotifications would alert an admin to a detected loop or topology-change event requiring investigation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MSTP bridge enable state
  • per-port MSTP role/configuration
  • spanning tree timers (hello/forward-delay/max-age)
  • loopback-block status
  • topology-change notifications
  • global STP mode
