Description: Manages Transition Networks DHCP relay agent forwarding configuration and server bindings.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TN-DHCP-RELAY-MIB?

TN-DHCP-RELAY-MIB is a Transition Networks enterprise MIB for configuring and monitoring the DHCP relay agent function on its managed switches, which forwards DHCP client requests to a configured DHCP server across subnet boundaries. It exposes global relay configuration (server IP address, relay mode, DHCP Option 82 information-insertion mode and policy) alongside statistics counters for packets successfully relayed and various error conditions on both the client and server sides. Its monitoring value is centered on DHCP service health and configuration correctness: rising counters like tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsServerPacketErrors, tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsClientPacketErrors, tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsBadCircuitId, or tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsMissingCircuitId/tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsMissingAgentOption indicate a DHCP relay misconfiguration or a malfunctioning downstream device sending malformed Option 82 data, which would otherwise cause clients to fail to obtain an IP address. It builds on the standard DHCP relay/Option 82 concepts defined in IETF RFCs (e.g. RFC 3046) though it is implemented as a vendor-specific MIB rather than importing a standard DHCP MIB. It is deployed on Transition Networks managed Ethernet switches acting as DHCP relay agents at the network edge, and administrators can download the TN-DHCP-RELAY-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-DHCP-RELAY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Transition Networks managed Ethernet switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll tnDhcpRelayConfigGlobalsServerIpAddress and tnDhcpRelayConfigGlobalsMode to confirm the relay agent is pointed at the correct DHCP server and enabled, then watch tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsClientPacketsRelayed versus tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsClientPacketErrors to spot a rising error rate. tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsBadCircuitId and tnDhcpRelayStatusStatisticsMissingCircuitId climbing over time would point to an Option 82 information-insertion problem, such as a misconfigured tnDhcpRelayConfigGlobalsInformationPolicy, that is preventing clients on certain ports from being correctly identified to the DHCP server.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DHCP server IP configuration
  • relay mode enable status
  • packets relayed (client/server)
  • relay/Option 82 error counts
  • circuit ID/agent option errors
