Description: Manages Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR MSDP peer configuration and multicast source cache.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is TIMETRA-MSDP-MIB?
This Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent proprietary MIB manages the Multicast Source Discovery Protocol (MSDP) on 7750 SR SROS routers, used to interconnect separate PIM sparse-mode multicast domains by letting rendezvous points share active-source information. It exposes MSDP peer/session configuration (admin state, encapsulation, import/export routing policies) as well as operational counters like message receive rate and thresholds. Its monitoring relevance is clear in tmnxMsdpAdminState for protocol enablement and in tmnxMsdpMsgRcvRate / tmnxMsdpMsgRcvRateThd, which flag an overloaded or misbehaving MSDP peer generating an abnormal message rate. It complements the standard PIM-MIB, since MSDP as described in its module description is typically co-located with the PIM sparse-mode rendezvous point. It's typically deployed on 7750 SR core routers interconnecting multiple multicast domains across an ISP backbone or between autonomous systems, and the TIMETRA-MSDP-MIB download is available for administrators to load into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIMETRA-MSDP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR core router
Monitoring Examples
An operator checks tmnxMsdpAdminState to confirm MSDP is enabled, then monitors tmnxMsdpMsgRcvRate against tmnxMsdpMsgRcvRateThd to catch a peer flooding source-active messages beyond the configured threshold, which tmnxMsdpMsgRcvRateTime timestamps for correlation. Reviewing tmnxMsdpMaxActiveSources alongside the configured tmnxMsdpExportPolicy1-5 / tmnxMsdpImportPolicy1 route-policy chain helps diagnose why expected multicast sources from a peer domain are being filtered or are missing from the source cache.
What Can Be Monitored
- MSDP admin state
- message receive rate and threshold
- maximum active sources
- data encapsulation setting
- import/export policy chain

| timetraMsdpMIBModule | 1.3.6.1.4.1.6527.1.1.3.43 | This is the SNMP MIB module to manage and provision MSDP protocol on Alcatel SROS equipment. The Multicast Source Discovery Protocol (MSDP) is used to connect multicast routing domains. It typically runs on the same router as the Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) sparse-mode rendezvous point (RP). Each MSDP router establishes adjacencies with internal and external MSDP peers similar to the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). These peer routers inform each other about active sources within the domain. When they detect active sources, the routers can send PIM sparse-mode explicit join messages to the active source. | INT tmnxMsdpRpfLookupSequence | 1.3.6.1.4.1.6527.3.1.2.43.1.24 | INTEGER | read-create | tmnxMsdpRpfLookupSequence is used to configure the sequence of route tables that MSDP uses for finding a Reverse Path Forwarding(RPF) interface for a particular multicast route. 'mucastRouteTable' is the unicast route table to be used only by multicast protocols(MSDP) which will contain routes submitted by multi-protocol BGP, ISIS and OSPF. 'ucastRouteTable' is the regular unicast route table which will contain routes submitted by all the unicast routing protocols. By default, only the 'ucastRouteTable' is looked up by MSDP for calculating RPF interface towards the source/rendezvous point. However the operator can specify the following: a) Use unicast route table only b) Use multicast unicast route table only or c) Use both the route tables. In case of (c), MSDP will always lookup first in the 'mucastRouteTable' and if there is a route, it will use it. If MSDP does not find a route in the first lookup, it will try to find it in the 'ucastRouteTable'. |

This object does not measure time per se; instead, it is the delta from the time at which an SA message is received at which it should be expired if not refreshed. (i.e., it is the value of tmnxMsdpSrcActiveExpiryTime immediately after receiving an SA message applying to that row.) |
| C32 tmnxMsdpSARejectExportPolicy | 1.3.6.1.4.1.6527.3.1.2.43.1.26 | Counter32 | read-only | The value of tmnxMsdpSARejectExportPolicy indicates number of SA messages that were not sent due to export policy. |
