Organization: This MIB module was developed through the coordinated effort of two organizations: T11 began the development and the IETF (in the IMSS Working Group) finished it.

Category: Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Defines managed objects for managing Fibre Channel Security Protocol (FC-SP) Security Associations.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring T11-FC-SP-SA-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is T11-FC-SP-SA-MIB?

T11-FC-SP-SA-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB from the INCITS T11 committee for managing Fibre Channel Security Protocol (FC-SP) Security Associations (SAs), the cryptographic sessions that secure FC-SP-enabled fabric links. It exposes a per-fabric interface capabilities table (t11FcSpSaIfTable) describing supported security mechanisms (ESP header, CT authentication, IKEv2, IKEv2 authentication) plus replay-prevention and dead-peer-detection settings, alongside tables for SA proposals and negotiated transforms. Its monitoring focus is security/software configuration state: confirming which cryptographic capabilities and replay-protection settings are enabled per fabric interface, and whether dead-peer-detection is functioning, relating to the security posture and link liveness of FC-SP sessions rather than physical hardware sensors. It's explicitly built on the T11 FC-SP specification and complements the related T11-FC-SP-POLICY-MIB, sharing the fabric-indexed structure of Fibre Channel fabric MIBs. It's deployed in SAN environments on Fibre Channel switches/directors implementing FC-SP link security between fabric elements. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the T11-FC-SP-SA-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in T11-FC-SP-SA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (INCITS T11 FC-SP)
  • Fibre Channel switches/directors in SAN fabrics

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll t11FcSpSaIfTable/t11FcSpSaIfEntry by t11FcSpSaIfIndex and t11FcSpSaIfFabricIndex to check which capabilities (t11FcSpSaIfEspHeaderCapab, t11FcSpSaIfIKEv2Capab) are negotiated on a given fabric interface, confirming the expected security mechanism is in use. Checking t11FcSpSaIfReplayPrevention and t11FcSpSaIfReplayWindowSize verifies anti-replay protection is configured as intended, and monitoring t11FcSpSaIfDeadPeerDetections helps detect a stale security association where the peer switch has stopped responding.

What Can Be Monitored

  • FC-SP security capability negotiation per interface
  • replay prevention/window settings
  • dead peer detection status
  • security association proposals/transforms

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using t11FcSpSaIfOutDrops OID:

Select a device implementing T11-FC-SP-SA-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type t11FcSpSaIfOutDrops into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of output frames that were dropped, instead of being transmitted on this interface, because they matched an active (at that time) Traffic Selector with an action of 'Drop'. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
