Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Extends the standard FCIP management MIB with Cisco-specific objects for FCIP tunnels carrying Fibre Channel traffic over IP networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-FCIP-MGMT-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-FCIP-MGMT-EXT-MIB extends Cisco's FCIP (Fibre Channel over IP) management MIB with additional TCP-tuning and performance objects for FCIP tunnels that carry storage-area-network traffic across IP links, used on Cisco MDS storage switches. It exposes per-FCIP-entity configuration and status objects covering TCP keepalive timers, retransmission counts, path MTU discovery, and bandwidth estimates. The MIB is oriented toward monitoring the operational health and performance of FCIP tunnels, exposing metrics like estimated round-trip time and available bandwidth that reveal degraded WAN links carrying storage traffic. It explicitly depends on and extends the base CISCO-FCIP-MGMT-MIB, since it only adds supplementary objects not present there. It is deployed on Cisco MDS series SAN switches with FCIP extension modules connecting geographically separated fabrics. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-FCIP-MGMT-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FCIP-MGMT-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS series SAN switches (FCIP)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cfmFcipEntityExtTable, keyed per FCIP entity, reading cfmFcipEntityExtTcpRndTrpTimeEst and cfmFcipEntityExtTcpMinAvailBW to gauge current WAN link quality, alongside cfmFcipEntityExtTcpMaxReTx to spot excessive TCP retransmissions. A climbing round-trip time estimate combined with retransmission counts approaching cfmFcipEntityExtTcpMaxReTx would indicate a degrading IP path affecting replicated storage traffic between sites.

What Can Be Monitored

  • TCP keepalive timeout
  • TCP retransmission count
  • path MTU discovery status
  • TCP send buffer size
  • estimated available bandwidth
  • estimated round-trip time
