Category: Switch Management - D-Link

Description: Manages D-Link protocol-based VLAN assignment rules mapping traffic protocols to specific VLANs.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SWPROTOCOLVLAN-MIB?

SWPROTOCOLVLAN-MIB is a D-Link proprietary MIB for managing protocol-based (policy) VLAN assignment, a feature that classifies untagged traffic into a VLAN based on its Layer 3 protocol type rather than port or tag membership. It exposes a per-port protocol-VLAN group table along with the priority assigned to each protocol group on that port. Monitoring it lets an administrator verify the software classification policy is correctly grouping traffic by protocol, catching misclassification that could put traffic in the wrong VLAN or cause unexpected priority handling. It explicitly references RFC 2674 (Q-BRIDGE-MIB) for other related VLAN parameters, indicating it is meant to work alongside standard VLAN MIBs rather than replace them. It is deployed on D-Link managed Ethernet switches that need protocol-based VLAN segmentation, such as separating IPX, IP, or AppleTalk traffic onto distinct VLANs. Engineers can download the SWPROTOCOLVLAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SWPROTOCOLVLAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • D-Link managed Ethernet switches (e.g. DES-3500 series)

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls swdot1vProtocolPortTable/swdot1vProtocolPortEntry to confirm which protocol-VLAN group each port is assigned to, and swdot1vProtocolPortGroupPriority to check the priority given to that protocol group on the port. An anomaly here, such as a port unexpectedly missing from its expected protocol group, would explain why traffic of a particular protocol is landing in the wrong VLAN or being handled with the wrong priority.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port protocol-VLAN group assignment
  • protocol VLAN group priority per port
  • protocol-based VLAN classification table entries
