Description: Manages Sonus Networks softswitch SONET interface configuration, section/line/path overhead, and alarm status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SONUS-SONET-MIB?

SONUS-SONET-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Sonus Networks extending SONET/SDH management for their softswitch platform's optical transport interfaces, covering section, line, and path overhead configuration and alarm status. It exposes per-port administrative configuration (shelf/slot/port addressing, naming, mode) and control actions/timeouts for SONET ports. Its monitoring value lies in physical-layer hardware fault detection — SONET alarm status and administrative/operational state of each port — reflecting whether the optical transport hardware is functioning, distinct from CPU/memory-type metrics. It sits within the SONUS-SMI enterprise namespace and shares patterns with standard SONET-MIB (RFC 2558) conventions for overhead/alarm modeling. It is deployed in Sonus softswitch/media gateway platforms that use SONET/SDH transport for trunk connectivity in carrier networks. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SONUS-SONET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SONUS-SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sonus Networks softswitch platform with SONET/SDH transport

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll sonusSonetPortAdmnTable/sonusSonetPortAdmnEntry, indexed by sonusSonetPortAdmnShelfIndex, sonusSonetPortAdmnSlotIndex, and sonusSonetPortAdmnPortIndex, checking sonusSonetPortAdmnState and sonusSonetPortAdmnMode to confirm a given SONET port (identified by sonusSonetPortAdmnName) is administratively up and correctly configured. sonusSonetPortAdmnRowStatus would reveal whether a port entry is active, and repeated sonusSonetPortAdmnAction/sonusSonetPortAdmnTimeout activity might indicate a port cycling through resets, a sign of an unstable optical link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SONET port administrative/operational state
  • port mode and action status
  • port naming and addressing
  • row status of port configuration
  • section/line/path alarm conditions
