What Is SONET-MIB?

SONET-MIB is an IETF standards-based module (RFC 3592) for managing SONET/SDH optical transmission interfaces, covering the section, line, and path layers of the SONET/SDH hierarchy. It exposes both configuration objects (interface type, framing mode) and performance/fault objects such as line/section/path current and interval performance-monitoring counters and alarm/defect indications. In monitoring terms it tracks the hardware/transmission health of SONET/SDH links, revealing error-rate counters, loss-of-signal or loss-of-frame conditions, and other physical-layer fault indications rather than general compute resources like CPU or memory. It builds on and is used alongside the IETF IF-MIB, since SONET interfaces register as entries in the standard interfaces table. Effective SONET-MIB SNMP monitoring is deployed on SONET/SDH transport equipment and router/switch line cards in carrier and enterprise optical transport networks.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SONET section/line/path error counters
  • loss-of-signal/loss-of-frame defects
  • interface framing configuration
  • performance-monitoring interval statistics

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer — applies to SONET/SDH transport equipment and optical interface line cards

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll the SONET section- and line-current performance tables for error-second and severely-errored-second counts, and check the medium table for configured line type. A rising count of coding violations or an active loss-of-signal defect flag in these tables would indicate a degrading or failed optical link. Because no concrete sample object names were supplied for this module, table names are given generically based on the well-documented RFC 3592 structure rather than exact source text.

sonetMediumEntry1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1not-accessibleAn entry in the SONET/SDH Medium table.
INT sonetMediumType1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1.1INTEGERread-writeThis variable identifies whether a SONET or a SDH signal is used across this interface.
I32 sonetMediumTimeElapsed1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1.2Integer32read-onlyThe number of seconds, including partial seconds, that have elapsed since the beginning of the current measurement period. If, for some reason, such as an adjustment in the system's time-of-day clock, the current interval exceeds the maximum value, the agent will return the maximum value.
I32 sonetMediumValidIntervals1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1.3Integer32read-onlyThe number of previous 15-minute intervals for which data was collected. A SONET/SDH interface must be capable of supporting at least n intervals. The minimum value of n is 4. The default of n is 32. The maximum value of n is 96. The value will be unless the measurement was (re-)started within the last (*15) minutes, in which case the value will be the number of complete 15 minute intervals for which the agent has at least some data. In certain cases (e.g., in the case where the agent is a proxy) it is possible that some intervals are unavailable. In this case, this interval is the maximum interval number for which data is available.
INT sonetMediumLineCoding1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1.4INTEGERread-writeThis variable describes the line coding for this interface. The B3ZS and CMI are used for electrical SONET/SDH signals (STS-1 and STS-3). The Non-Return to Zero (NRZ) and the Return to Zero are used for optical SONET/SDH signals.
INT sonetMediumLineType1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1.5INTEGERread-writeThis variable describes the line type for this interface. The line types are Short and Long Range Single Mode fiber or Multi-Mode fiber interfaces, and coax and UTP for electrical interfaces. The value sonetOther should be used when the Line Type is not one of the listed values.
STR sonetMediumCircuitIdentifier1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1.6DisplayStringread-writeThis variable contains the transmission vendor's circuit identifier, for the purpose of facilitating troubleshooting. Note that the circuit identifier, if available, is also represented by ifPhysAddress.
I32 sonetMediumInvalidIntervals1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1.7Integer32read-onlyThe number of intervals in the range from 0 to sonetMediumValidIntervals for which no data is available. This object will typically be zero except in cases where the data for some intervals are not available (e.g., in proxy situations).
BIT sonetMediumLoopbackConfig1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.1.1.8Bitsread-writeThe current loopback state of the SONET/SDH interface. The values mean: sonetNoLoop Not in the loopback state. A device that is not capable of performing a loopback on this interface shall always return this value. sonetFacilityLoop The received signal at this interface is looped back out through the corresponding transmitter in the return direction. sonetTerminalLoop The signal that is about to be transmitted is connected to the associated incoming receiver. sonetOtherLoop Loopbacks that are not defined here.
INT sonetSESthresholdSet1.3.6.1.2.1.10.39.1.1.2INTEGERread-writeAn enumerated integer indicating which recognized set of SES thresholds that the agent uses for determining severely errored seconds and unavailable time. other(1) None of the following. bellcore1991(2) Bellcore TR-NWT-000253, 1991 [TR253], or ANSI T1M1.3/93-005R2, 1993 [T1M1.3]. RFC description

SONET/SDH synchronous optical network MIB (RFC 3592) for optical transport management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, SONET/SDH transport equipment and optical interface line cards (section/line/path performance/fault status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
