Description: Supplemental SONET performance monitoring MIB extending RFC 2558 for ANSI T1.231-1997 compliance, adding augmented PM counters for section, line, path, and VT layers on SmartOptics SiteLight devices
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SL-SONET-SUP-PM-MIB?
SL-SONET-SUP-PM-MIB is a Smartoptics-specific supplemental performance-monitoring MIB that extends the standard SONET-MIB (RFC 2558) to cover ANSI T1.231-1997 requirements not addressed by that base MIB, on its SiteLight equipment. Its data is entirely performance-monitoring in nature -- configurable threshold tables for Coding Violations (CV), Errored Seconds (ES), Severely Errored Seconds (SES), and Severely Errored Framing Seconds (SEFS) at the section, line, path, and VT layers, with both current and per-day threshold variants. Its monitoring role is squarely about detecting degrading transmission-layer performance: threshold-crossing on these counters signals a SONET link's signal quality is deteriorating (e.g. rising line error rates) before it escalates to a hard failure, making it a key performance/fault-prediction tool for SONET transport hardware. It explicitly depends on and extends the IETF SONET-MIB (RFC 2558) and follows ANSI T1.231-1997 performance-monitoring definitions. It is deployed on Smartoptics SiteLight SONET-capable transport equipment in carrier networks running SONET transmission. Engineers can download the SL-SONET-SUP-PM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SL-SONET-SUP-PM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Smartoptics SiteLight SONET transport equipment
Monitoring Examples
An operator would configure sonetSectionDefaultThresholdTable entries such as sonetSectionDefaultCVThreshold, sonetSectionDefaultESThreshold, and sonetSectionDefaultSESThreshold to set baseline alarm thresholds for a given rate, then monitor the corresponding sonetSectionThresholdTable per-interface instances for threshold crossings. Comparing current-interval thresholds against the day-based variants (sonetSectionDefaultDayCVThreshold, sonetSectionDefaultDaySESThreshold) helps distinguish a transient burst of errors from a sustained degradation. The sonetSupObjectsPath and sonetSupObjectsVT groups extend the same threshold-based PM approach down to the path and VT layers for finer-grained fault localization.
What Can Be Monitored
- section/line/path/VT coding violations (CV)
- errored seconds (ES)
- severely errored seconds (SES)
- severely errored framing seconds (SEFS)
- per-day performance thresholds

| PER sonetVTDaySESs | 1.3.6.1.4.1.4515.1.6.3.3.1.17.1.7 | PerfTotalCount | read-only | The path severely errored second (SES-V) is a count of 1-second intervals containing sonetSevereErrorThreshold or more EDC error (V5 byte), or one or more AIS-V, LOP-V or UNEQ-V defects which were encountered by the SONET path layer interface in a previous 1-day interval. |
| PER sonetVTDayUASs | 1.3.6.1.4.1.4515.1.6.3.3.1.17.1.8 | PerfTotalCount | read-only | The path unavailable second (UAS-V) is a count of 1-second intervals for which the SONET VT-path was unavailable during a previous 1-day interval. The SONET VT-path becomes unavailable at the onset of 10 contiguous SES-Vs. The 10 SES-Vs are included in unavailable time. Once unavailable, the SONET VT-path becomes available at the onset of 10 contiguous seconds with no SES-Vs. The 10 seconds with no SES-Vs are excluded from unavailable time. |
| PER sonetVTDayEBs | 1.3.6.1.4.1.4515.1.6.3.3.1.17.1.9 | PerfTotalCount | read-only | The number VT path blocks in which one or more bits are in error counted during a day. |

| sonetFarEndVTDayTable | 1.3.6.1.4.1.4515.1.6.3.3.2.3 | not-accessible | The SONET Far End Path Day table. Contains various statistics collected by each SONET Far End Path over multiple 1-day intervals of operation. | |
| sonetFarEndVTDayEntry | 1.3.6.1.4.1.4515.1.6.3.3.2.3.1 | not-accessible | An entry in the SONET Far End Path Day table. | |
| INT sonetFarEndVTDayNumber | 1.3.6.1.4.1.4515.1.6.3.3.2.3.1.1 | INTEGER | read-only | A number which identifies the 1-day interval for which the set of far-end VT-path related statistics is available. The number is between 1 and n, where n is the number of 1-day intervals supported by the agent. The interval identified by 1 is the current 1-day interval, 2 is the previous (most recently completed) 1-day interval and n is the least recently completed 1-day interval. |
| DAT sonetFarEndVTDayStartTime | 1.3.6.1.4.1.4515.1.6.3.3.2.3.1.2 | DateAndTime | read-only | This variable indicates the date and time at which the current interval of measurements began. |
| T/F sonetFarEndVTDayValidData | 1.3.6.1.4.1.4515.1.6.3.3.2.3.1.3 | TruthValue | read-only | This variable assumes the value true(1) if the data stored for this interval is both valid and complete. It is set to false(2) if the data stored for this interval is incomplete or otherwise invalid because (a) the data stored for this interval is for a period greater or less than 24 hours, or (b) some data is missing (e.g., when a near-end defect prevents some far-end data from being collected). |

A far-end path failure event begins when the first of any remote failure indication (RFI-V, RFI-V server, or RFI-V connectivity) failure is declared; a far-end path failure event ends when all RFI-V, RFI-V server, or RFI-V connectivity failures are cleared. |
