Description: MIB for managing Fibre Channel interface configuration, Worldwide Name, address IDs, and performance monitoring on Smartoptics SiteLight optical transport modules

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SL-FC-MIB?

SL-FC-MIB is a Smartoptics SiteLight MIB for Fibre Channel interfaces carried over the platform's optical transport equipment, commonly used for storage-area-network (SAN) extension over metro/long-haul optical links. It exposes FC port status data including login state, attached port type, and a current-interval performance table tracking link failures, synchronization losses, signal losses, primitive sequence protocol errors, and invalid transmission words. This is fundamentally a link-health/performance MIB: an operator watches these error counters to detect a degrading optical or FC link before it causes SAN replication errors or I/O timeouts, and checks login state to confirm the FC port has successfully established its fabric/loop login. It complements the platform's SONET/optical alarm MIBs, since FC-over-optical services depend on the underlying transport layer being error-free. It is deployed at sites using SiteLight equipment to extend Fibre Channel SANs across a metro or campus optical network for storage replication or disaster-recovery links. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SL-FC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SL-FC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Smartoptics SiteLight optical transport equipment (Fibre Channel interface)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll fcBxPortStatus to check fcBxPortStatusLoginState and fcBxPortStatusAttachedPortType, confirming the FC port has logged in correctly to the far-end device. Watching fcBxPortCurrentTable counters such as fcBxPortCurrentLinkFailures, fcBxPortCurrentSyncLosses, and fcBxPortCurrentInvalidTxWords over successive polls reveals a physical-layer problem (e.g., a marginal optical connector) well before it causes application-visible SAN errors. A rising fcBxPortCurrentPrimSeqProtoErrors count would point to a protocol-level issue worth escalating to the storage team.

What Can Be Monitored

  • FC port login state and attached port type
  • link failure and sync-loss counts
  • signal loss count
  • primitive sequence protocol errors
  • invalid transmission word count

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using fcBxPortCurrentLinkFailures OID:

Select a Smartoptics SiteLight optical transport equipment, Fibre Channel interface (link login/error-counter status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type fcBxPortCurrentLinkFailures into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The current number of link failures detected during this sampling interval. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
