Category: Wireless and Radio

Description: Manages Ruckus Wireless WLAN service set configuration, client associations, and traffic statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RUCKUS-WLAN-MIB?

RUCKUS-WLAN-MIB is a Ruckus Wireless vendor MIB for managing WLAN service set configuration and status on Ruckus access points and controllers. It exposes per-WLAN/BSS configuration such as SSID, BSSID, BSS type, supported operational rate set, beacon and DTIM period, RTS and fragmentation thresholds, and radio mode/channel, along with associated client station information. Its monitoring value centers on wireless service and configuration health: administrators use it to confirm a WLAN is broadcasting the expected SSID/BSSID on the correct channel and radio mode, that beacon timing and threshold parameters are within expected ranges, and to inspect connected station information for client-level visibility -- functioning primarily as a software/configuration-status MIB for the WLAN service rather than physical hardware sensors. It is a Ruckus-proprietary module complementing the vendor-neutral IEEE 802.11 MIB conventions and pairs closely with RUCKUS-ZD-AP-MIB for AP-level identity. It is deployed in enterprise and carrier Wi-Fi networks using Ruckus access points, typically managed through a ZoneDirector or SmartZone controller. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the RUCKUS-WLAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RUCKUS-WLAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ruckus Wireless access point
  • Ruckus WLAN controller (ZoneDirector/SmartZone)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ruckusWLANTable / ruckusWLANEntry rows to check ruckusWLANSSID and ruckusWLANBSSID against expected values, and ruckusWLANChannel and ruckusWLANRadioMode to confirm a WLAN is operating on its assigned RF channel and mode. Anomalies in ruckusWLANBeaconPeriod or ruckusWLANDTIMPeriod could indicate misconfigured power-save timing affecting client battery life, while an unusually low ruckusWLANRTSThreshold or ruckusWLANFragmentationThreshold might reveal settings causing excess protocol overhead in a noisy RF environment. The ruckusWLANStaInfo objects would be checked to inspect currently associated client stations.

What Can Be Monitored

  • WLAN SSID and BSSID
  • RF channel and radio mode
  • beacon and DTIM period
  • RTS and fragmentation thresholds
  • supported operational rate set
  • associated client station info

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ruckusWLANStaStatsRxDataFrames OID:

Select a Ruckus Wireless access point, Ruckus WLAN controller (ZoneDirector/SmartZone) (SSID/BSS configuration/status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ruckusWLANStaStatsRxDataFrames into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports rx data frames. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
