Category: Riverstone Networks
Description: Configures and monitors traffic rate limiting policies and policer statistics on Riverstone routers.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RIVERSTONE-RATELIMIT-MIB?
RIVERSTONE-RATELIMIT-MIB is a Riverstone Networks enterprise MIB that manages traffic rate-limiting and policing features on Riverstone switches and routers. It exposes configuration objects for token-bucket meters, port-level and Layer 2 rate limiting policies, and their application/administrative status across the chassis. Rather than hardware health, this MIB is mainly used to monitor the software/policy status of QoS enforcement, such as whether a rate-limit policy applied successfully, whether meters are in a fail-action state, and error messages surfacing from misconfigured or rejected rate-limit rules. It depends on the vendor's broader Riverstone enterprise MIB tree and typically works alongside interface and QoS MIBs for a complete picture. It is deployed on Riverstone (later Alcatel/Lucent-acquired) enterprise switches and routers used for traffic shaping and bandwidth control, and administrators can download the RIVERSTONE-RATELIMIT-MIB file to load into their MIB browser for reference.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RIVERSTONE-RATELIMIT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Riverstone Networks enterprise switches
- Riverstone/Alcatel-Lucent routers
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll rsTBMeterApplyMasterAdminStatus and rsTBMeterApplyErrorMessage to confirm a token-bucket rate-limit policy was successfully pushed to the master switch, and check rsTBMeterFailActionRewrite to see how traffic exceeding the configured rate is being handled. Monitoring rsPortRLMasterAdminStatus and rsPortRLErrorMessage across rsRLModeTable entries would reveal if a per-port rate-limit configuration failed to apply, which would show up as unexpected full-rate traffic passing through a port meant to be throttled. rsRLModeLastChanged helps correlate rate-limit configuration changes with observed traffic anomalies.
What Can Be Monitored
- rate-limit meter admin status
- policy apply errors
- port-level rate limiting status
- Layer 2 rate limiting status
- fail-action behavior
- last configuration change time
