What Is RIVERSTONE-VLAN-EXTENSIONS-MIB?

This is a proprietary Riverstone Networks MIB extending the standard Q-BRIDGE-MIB (RFC 2674) with vendor-specific VLAN traffic statistics and customer-VLAN counters for stacked/multi-tenant scenarios. It exposes per-port, per-VLAN traffic statistics tables including standard and high-capacity (64-bit) octet counters, plus a separate customer-VLAN statistics table for service-provider environments. This is primarily a performance-counter MIB, useful for monitoring traffic load and throughput per VLAN per port, where rising or stalled octet counts reveal congestion, misconfigured trunking, or a VLAN that has gone silent. It explicitly complements qBridgeMIB from RFC 2674 for the base VLAN model, adding only statistics extensions on top of it. It is typically deployed on Riverstone Networks Ethernet switches/routers used by carriers and enterprises for VLAN-segmented Ethernet services. Engineers can download the RIVERSTONE-VLAN-EXTENSIONS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RIVERSTONE-VLAN-EXTENSIONS-MIB. Polling rsPortVlanStatsTable's rsPortVlanInOctets and rsPortVlanOutOctets for a given port/VLAN pair shows traffic volume in each direction, while the high-capacity variants rsPortVlanHCInOctets and rsPortVlanHCOutOctets provide 64-bit counters for high-speed links to avoid counter wraps. rsPortCustomerVlanStatsTable lets a service provider isolate traffic for an individual customer VLAN, so a sudden drop to zero octets there would indicate that customer's VLAN service has gone down.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rsPortVlanInOctets OID:

Select a Riverstone Networks Ethernet switch/router (per-port/per-VLAN traffic statistics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rsPortVlanInOctets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of octets of the frames received by this port from its segment that were classified as belonging to this VLAN. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
