Description: Manages SNMP-initiated ping operations and round-trip time statistics on Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RBN-PING-MIB?
RBN-PING-MIB is a Redback Networks (later Ericsson) enterprise MIB for the SmartEdge series Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) platform, extending the standard IETF DISMAN-PING-MIB (RFC 4560) with vendor-specific ping test capabilities. It exposes objects for configuring and triggering SNMP-initiated ICMP ping tests, and for retrieving per-test results and historical round-trip-time statistics. Administrators use it to actively probe network reachability and measure jitter, minimum/maximum/average round-trip time toward configured targets, effectively monitoring network-path health and latency performance as a software-driven diagnostic capability of the device. It explicitly depends on and supplements the IETF DISMAN-PING-MIB standard for its base test-control model. It is typically deployed on Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS routers in broadband/ISP access networks where operators need active reachability and latency testing toward subscriber-facing or upstream network elements. Engineers can download the RBN-PING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-PING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Redback SmartEdge BRAS routers
- Ericsson SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER) family
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would create a ping test and then poll rbnPingResultsTable/rbnPingResultsEntry for live results, including rbnPingResultsJitter to detect jitter spikes on the path. Historical results are retained in rbnPingHistoryTable/rbnPingHistoryEntry, indexed by rbnPingHistoryIndex, where rbnPingHistoryMinRtt, rbnPingHistoryMaxRtt, and rbnPingHistoryAverageRtt reveal whether round-trip time toward rbnPingHistoryIpTargetAddress is degrading over time. A sudden rise in rbnPingHistoryAverageRtt or high rbnPingResultsJitter would indicate congestion or a failing path segment, and rbnPingNotifications can alert operators when tests cross configured thresholds.
What Can Be Monitored
- ping test round-trip time (min/max/average)
- jitter on active ping tests
- ping test history per target address
- reachability of configured IP targets
- number of configured ping tests
